Anemia

In my past 2 rounds of blood work I was told that I was rather anemic and should (in the nurses opinion) eat a steak or two to fix that problem.Rejecting her ideas, I increased my iron rich raw vegan foods (mushrooms, dried apricots, spinach, asparagus, and my occasional RT4 leek soup.Well this round of blood work I am told I am even more anemic that's before...I assume I am just not absorbing it correctly. They offered to do an iron injection, but I refused when I was told it was animal derived.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • What were your full iron studies.

What figures were deemed to be anemic? Hemoglobin values or iron studies?

Iron injections are used by all running, swimming, boxing and cycling champions. They are legal and incredibly effective at boosting hemoglobin levels even higher.

What is not vegan about iron injections? They are use iron sucrose or iron dextran with water and sodium hydroxide.

Still, they don't treat the cause and unless you are an athlete like Phelps who just wants crazy high iron levels so the EPO works even better, Id stay clear of them and look at why you are losing iron and actually if you GENUINELY have anemia or if its psuedoanemia cos you are better hydrated etc.

  • When you eat foods rich in iron it's important to eat them with foods rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron. Green smoothies are a great idea. Lots of bananas and some broccoli for vitamin C and whatever iron rich greens you like. Spinach is always great.

    • That was my first step, 2 weeks of bananas, oranges, and spinach mono meals, did nothing for me. My lack of b12 was my issue.
    • The vitamin C thingy was my first thought too...

  • Screw that! Way too Frankenstein for me
  • Hello! What do you think of this anemia stem cell treatment? I discovered some info on it from uctclinic which specialises in stem cell treatment of different diseases. They say, it is really effective and reliable. What can you say about it?

    • 800 grams of b12 a day, and it's like I was never anemic.
  • So the eastern doctor I see was appalled that my primary felt that 168 was an acceptable level for b12. I can only get approved for 1 shot every 3 months, so he has me or an oral liquid version. 4000mcg broken up 4 times a day for 2 weeks, then reduce to 3000mcg for 2 weeks (at which point I will have blood work again). Both him and my nutritionist feel it is a b12 issue, and would like to see a level over 400.

24 hours and I can see minor changes. I used to nod off when the kids had their one show a day at 1pm, today I am wide awake, but using it as my lay back and relax for 30mins time.
  • Maybe its the haircut? xD

I notice your eyes in your avitar look like someone who is a night owl. Going to bed later than 8-9pm consistently will affect digestion for sure. You will run lower in certain vitamins and minerals due to consistent late nights. Testosterone levels can plumet from late nights combined with under eating and that can cause anemia. (Testosterone boosts red blood cell production).

Not possible to not get enough dietary iron on this lifestyle. It is possible to get too much however. If i were in your shoes, Id ditch the things you are doing that you know are bad and start eating 3000+cals a day from whole plant food staples. Also you need to put your blood tests up so we can see what else is going on. One can have low iron levels but have mega high hemoglobin. So one could be winning the tour de france but still be 'anemic' depending on the individuals definition of that.

Is it a hemoglobin or iron issue when you talk about anemia?

    • You are pretty spot on about the picture. That was taken when shortly before I went raw. I was having 6-10 seizures a day, which greatly interrupted my sleep cycle, and my 'genius' self compensated with energy drinks. Since going from vegan to 90% raw vegan, I have had 1-2 a month. So very little sleep has since been interrupted.

My Eastern doctor currently has my copies of my blood work. I was unaware that previously my general practitioner had only informed him that my levels (other than iron and platelet count) were all good. He feels it is a b12 issue. In talking about my unhealthy vegan self, we realized that my 2-3 energy drink a day habit was giving me 400-600% of the USDA percent of daily values of b12. Hemoglobin I was told by both doctors was fine.

I have always had a lower iron count, but not this ow. My platelet count is always low, however my hemophilia has slightly improved since I first went RT4.

I have another appointment on Tuesday.

I have been eating about 2500-2800cals of whole fruit (occasionally fresh orange juice), and 100-300cals of leafy greens a day. On very busy days I tend not I have about 800 calories of that as corn pasta or rice. I will work on adding 200+ more calories of fruit, building up to 2800 was rough for me, I constantly felt extremely over full, but worked my way up.

      Thank you
