Hi There

New to this forum, so apologies if this particular subject has already been discussed!

Decided to go on a week of mono fruit detox.  I decided to do bananas.  Had 5 bananas this morning then noticed my asthma start to flare up.  Was very surprised, as had no idea that bananas could trigger asthma.  Did some research and found out that indeed bananas can be an asthma trigger.  It also lead me into the subject of salicylates and apparently it is this substance found in some fruits, veges etc that can cause these asthma symptoms.

Apparently fruits such as apples, kiwis, watermelon, oranges, mangos are on the 'OK' list, though I know that certain other melons can trigger my asthma.

I would love to know if anyone has anything to add to this subject?  Could it be that organic bananas would be OK, for example?  Or does asthma eventually clear up after eating ANY fruit for a long period?  Would really appreciate some personal info from people with asthma.

Many thanks,

:-)

  • I have no personal experience but you need to clean your body (detox) and it will stop reacting in such a way (asthma). Eat other fruits that are OK for you. Find out for yourself which ones works the best. Or combine them if neccesary. Soon you will see the diffrence.

  • Hi Yuliya

HUGE thanks for you reply...really appreciate it!

I had a 'feeling' the asthma coming on with the banana may be a 'transitory' symptom, so going to give the bananas another go...so thank you for confirming that!

One thing I did notice though, I felt really good for the rest of the day following eating them AND I had NO candida symptoms AT ALL! I have been struggling with candida for many years now and this is a big reason why I want to go high fruit, so that was a huge bonus!

I also experienced emotions coming out of no where...crying..just a bit..and the same thing happened today..! I just KNOW I am doing the right thing, I can sense and feel it...especially with my emotions coming out this way.

I am on oranges today as I want to try a different fruit each day, to see what I find best to get on with.  No asthma with the oranges.  I have also read that kiwis, watermelon, apples and grapes are also particularly good, so will try a new fruit each day.

It really is all about the transition and I am going from a vegan, high raw diet, so just eating fruit is new to me, after years of green smoothies and vege based.

Thank you again, will give he bananas another go!

    With kind regards,

    Cathy :-)

  • Were the bananas fully ripe (yellow with lots of brown spots)? Underripe nanas have a high latex content and can cause asthma type symptoms.

In my experience, breathlessness when eating ripe bananas is most commonly caused by a reaction to the ethylene that is used to make store-bought bananas ripen artificially. Some people react to the ethylene itself, but more often the reaction is due to the fact that the artificial ripening process increases the chance of a latex allergy reaction (associated with a cross-reaction to chitinase enzymes found in fruits like bananas and avocados). The fruit in its natural tree-ripened organic state will usually not cause any issues, but a conventional or 'organic' banana that has been treated may cause problems in susceptible individuals.

I had asthma symptoms as a child which were all resolved with a change of diet. Dairy, grains, and meat are key players in the modern asthma epidemic, and cutting these out should make a huge difference to your respiratory health. Make sure to eat all your fruit when fully ripe, as underripe fruits can cause allergies and general shortness of breath. Go for organic produce if you can, and keep well hydrated (3+ liters per day).

I wouldn't worry about salicylates for now, but if your breathing problems persist then just check back here and I can then give you some more info on the subject.

Wishing you all the best for your health, Esperanza

    • Hi Esperanza

Thank you so much for your reply...and yes, the bananas I were eating were not completely ripe, no spots and slightly green at the top.  I will re-try, with the ripe, spotty variety...thank you for that GREAT tip!  It make so much sense, with regards to your reply, modern technology is really interfering with natural produce and causing so many health issues, for so many.

I have had asthma  since I was about 8, so 40 years! A few years ago I found my baby record book and it showed what my Mum fed me when I was a baby.  I did some research and apparently if one of the first 'foods' you feed a baby is dairy, that can produce an intolerance which can lead to respiratory problems in later life..low and behold cheese and meat was written down!!

I now know, especially since becoming mega interested in food and health, that I do have certain 'triggers', so was surprised that I was getting them from bananas, but as with my first reply, I am now def going to give them another try.  I am vegan but still 'indulge' in wheat based products, these I have now cut out.  It never ceases how much there is still to learn..especially with regards to healing asthma.

I will keep coming back and check in, it will also be a good record of how I get on generally.  Thank you for your advice...ripe fruit it is!

      With kind regards,

      Cathy
