Backpacking out West/Southwest

I'm quitting my job in July, so I'll have all the time in the world to explore the Western U.S. before it all burns down. I'm hitting up Yellowstone and likely the Grand Canyon again. I'm wondering if any of you have been to lesser known places that you'd recommend I check out? I'm also open to meeting anyone in between stops to go to a smoothie bar or vegan cafe or something. Just drop me a line!

  • I am traveling by car to LA from Michigan. Leaving the 29th. I plan on camping instead of hotel stays.

    • That's cool. We should meet up somewhere! Are you planning to go to Yellowstone, or is that too far out of your way to LA?

      • Unfortunately, it is!! I was going to try camping in MO or KS for a night. I would love some company as I am traveling solo!

        • BTW, I am leaving the 29th, tomorrow. I know it's a late notice. I just had the idea to camp instead of hotels.

          • Oooh, gotcha. I don't leave until the end of July. Safe travels!

  • Definitely visit Joshua Tree National Park In California the rocks are amazing, and for the most beautiful beaches on the left coast go to Pebble Beach.  Plenty of nature trails and hiking.   If you want a challenge and want to climb the tallest mountain in southern Cali second to Mt. Whitney try Vivian Creek trail to Mt San Gorgonio.  Amazing view up there and plenty of camp grounds for backpackers.

    • Joshua Tree Park looks awesome! Wiki says it's a great place for stargazing. Mt San Gorgonio seems legit too. Happy to hear it's backpacker-friendly, but apparently planes like to 'crash' there as well.

  • If you make it all the way down to Tucson, hit me up for some pun and games.

Not that they're unknowns, but if you're in the GC region, you should also check out Flagstaff and Sedona just a hop down the road.  Each very beautiful in their own way.

    But don't wait too long!

    • I'll let you know. I want to hit up White Sands again, so I don't see why I couldn't swoop through Tucson.

Yeah, James Balog (and others) predict a lot of the forests out West will be lost due to drought, longer summers, and hotter temps - all causing forest fires.
