Hi all,

I have a mild version of a skin condition called Ichthyosis and I had recently figured out that my chocolate and lolly eating ways were causing this condition to flare up, giving me red, dry patches on my face - at its worst I get incredibly itchy and it eventually spreads to the rest of my body.

I was in a constant battle with myself to try and cut out sugary, processed foods to avoid the flaring up of my skin but the cravings were intense! I stumbled across RT4 and it seemed like the perfect solution because I love fruit and I love pasta, rice, potatoes... any form of carbs, really!

Skin aside, I feel great and love what I'm eating, but unfortunately the reaction I've had to my skin has been almost immediate. It has flared up again and I suspect that any sugar in general will flare up my skin, not just processed sugars. Unfortunately dermatologists are not really much help, none of them have asked me about my diet and have previously subscribed creams that are harmful to me long term without informing me.

Does anyone else have experience with this, or could offer me advice as to what I can try next? I was thinking of trying one smoothie/mono meal of fruit in the morning with two cooked, high carb vegan meals for lunch and dinner to see if cutting back on the fruit a little would help? I know it's not ideal but my skin doesn't seem to be letting me have this much fruit!

Any guidance would be appreciated!

  • Hello Hayley,

May be I am late to this discussion.

I recommend make sure you are drinking enough water and well hydrated.

Next, foods that are high oxalate can cause some skin conditions in some people.  If you eat a lot of kale, chard, spinach, and yes the chocolate, may be cut back on it and see if that helps.

For greens, focus more on lettuce greens.

    Good luck and Peace, PK

  • Hi, Hailey, I don't know about ichtyosis in particular, but other dermatitis improve with omega 3 and 6. My guess is that it might not be the fructose flaring it up but too low omegas for you on this diet? Why not try supplementing the smoothies with flax or linnseeds?
Scientifically, there's been no link found between ichtyosis and diet, unlike eczema, perhaps that's why nobody asked you about your diet...(med doctor here)
But remember veganism and high carb is in no way linked to any skin disease and you won't be just helping yourself but others. All the best,
    XxM
  • What were you eating before Rtill4?

    • Omelette for breakfast, salmon, broccoli and rice for lunch, grapes and rice cakes for a snack, and then a stir fry for dinner. I'd always get intense cravings for something sweet after lunch so about every second day I'd have something like chocolate/lollies in there somewhere

  • What does a typical day look like for you specifically?  Food, exercise, sleep, sun?
    • I usually have a smoothie on my way to work with bananas, coconut milk, strawberries/mangoes, water and some cinnamon.

For lunch I've been having more whole fruit, if I get hungry in the afternoon I'll have rice cakes with hummus and dinner lately has been a vegan curry with loads of brown rice

I prep most of my meals a week in advance so I tend to eat the same thing during the week and switch it up whenever I get bored

After I get home from work I usually get changed and go to the gym for about an hour, I mainly lift weights and am fairly strong

I get about 7 hours of sleep a night, because I work in an office I don't usually get a huge amount of sun

      • Do you avoid sweet, heavily spiced (chili, pepper, mustard) salted or acid (vinegar, lemon), do you drink any caffeinated beverages? How much water are you drinking? Are you including greens in your diet? Do you use cronometer to track your nutrients to follow 80/10/10? I have never had this skin disorder, but your skin could be going through a detox initially. Keep us up to date.

A great place to start is to go through all the literature which are provided below, and many more throughout this website. Another thing I see a lot of people struggle with is they don't pay attention to their cooked meals which may be processed, full of sodium, and/or fat and combine horribly with the fruit we eat. The food we eat in the evening is not always digested all the way and when we eat loads of fruit in the morning there could be reactions. And use cronometer to make sure you are truly eating 80/10/10 and hitting all the nutrients to thrive. The things you have done in the past will greatly effect your early results.
