Hey,
I just realised that we all show online in the chat even if we're not opening it or even know it's there.
Could the site be changed a little so that people aren't signed onto chat by default, and only show in there when they open it? That way people know who they see in the list is there and paying attention; so we don't end up talking to ourself frequently.
I think it would improve the use of the chat room knowing whether or not someone is actually there.

why does it matter to you ?
I've said why it matters. So you can see who is actually using the chat, not everyone logged in by default, probably many of whom don't even know they are on it.
Fennec is saying it is default set to "Green/Chat" and would prefer it to be default "Red/NoChat", that way users who choose to Chat are specifically there to chat. Tiss an admin issue so maybe they can look into it, but Ning by default is pretty clunky so it may simply be what is.
rose von vegan showed me the green/red button on the chat box which i think may log you on or off chat.
can't say for sure because i don't chat (except in emergencies).
