Convencing my husband to stop buying meat!

I've just had my first fight with my husband sense becoming vegan. First let me say that we both believe 100% that our money is OUR money not his or mine alone. So he went to take some money from my wallet and said he was running to the store to get some food like potatoes, some sweet potatoes, tomato sauce, and bananas. I said great! Grab some orange juice as well wont you? He said yes and I also might get a thing of chicken for me and the boys. My heart stopped! I don't exactly remember what was said back and forth after that point but it got pretty heated. Somewhere along the line of me telling him I'm not comfortable with supporting this kind of cruelty with my money and I would feel so guilty knowing this money was being used to torture more animals. Then he was accusing me of forcing him to become vegan before he was ready and he should be able to buy meat if he wants to.... Ugh it was pretty bad. I'm not really sure what to do at this point. My husband has been very open so far about this especially considering his southern background and how he was raised on hunting and farming and eating meat with every meal. I'm not trying to FORCE him into vegan ism but i wouldn't feel right spending money on meat. I don't know.

Does anyone else have a spouse or family member you live with who eats meat? How do you deal with it?

  • This is a very tough situation to be in since it's YOUR money, being both his and your money together so you both have to find some common ground and compromise when it comes to the purchases you two make. I completely understand why you are apprehensive about him using the money to buy meat but since he isn't 100% vegan yet and deserves a say, you're going to have to give him some time. Maybe you can suggest he purchases some vegan versions of things he wants, being 2016 now there are TONS of amazing vegan alternatives for everything. So if he wants chicken to cook with his friends, maybe suggest he get a gardein product and give it a try with his friends. And when he does buy the flesh of another animal, let him know how that makes you feel without trying to attack him. Be humble, most of us weren't vegan all of our lives and it did take some time (some more than others) Hope things get better ^.^
    • Thank you Brandon your your kind reply! :) We both had a chance to calm down. I admit that I may have let my emotions get the best of me and I may have come off stronger than I intended. He came home from the supermarket (without buying any meat i should add) and said to me "look, if you really want me to become a vegan then you better prove to me this fake meat stuff is actually good." So that is my job right now. To find some veggie alternatives to some of his favorite meat dishes. I'm confident I can find some things he will like. But I also don't expect him to become fully vegan with me right away. So I think we've agreed to a VERY small amount of our grocery money going towards buying him some meat for the meantime. Hopefully we can slowly reduce this and get rid of it all together! But just as he has been so supportive of me, I will be supportive of him making a SLOW transition. :)
