Cultured Beef

Hi Everyone!Recently I have heard of the concept of 'cultured beef'. This means that the meat has been produced in a lab. The project is being lead by professor Mark Post at the Maastricht University. His technology uses 45% less energy, 99% less land and 96% less water than the production of conventional meat. Post hopes that the cultured beef will be available in supermarkets within 20 years from now.I still think veganism is the right way to go. It is the most sustainable lifestyle for the environment. But I do not expect that the whole world will turn vegan in 20 years or even ever at all.What are your thoughts on this topic? Is it a right step towards sustainability? Is it disgusting? Just let me know!Link to a page about Mark Post and his technology: http://www.brightlands.com/meet-bright-people/mark-post/

  • The field is evolving quickly. Sam Harris delves into the issue with Uma Valeti a cardiologist and CEO of Memphis Meats in the following podcast;

    Personally I'm more than satisfied in eating only plants but artificial meat has the potential to replace meat in the diet of those who consume meat and animal products - a win for animals.

    • The inventor Mark Post also agrees that veganism is even better for the environment and that vegans should stay vegan. This meat is really for those sort of stubborn meateaters and there are a lot of them. This way also the environmental and ethical issue is brought to the attention. Maybe, hopefully!, this whole discovery will make people think about these issues enough to become vegan!!
  • Honestly I think there will still be people who want "the real deal" ie, enslaved and suffered caucuses, but hey, at least they'd have a choice. Y'know, other than actually being healthy AND generally more compassionate and reasonable (veganism).

    It's still a waste of resources and time developing this, as it'll still be almost as toxic as conventional meat-farming, just more sustainable and ethical, theoretically, as well as cheaper. Far far cheaper.

    In regards to sustainability though, I don't think it matters that it is more sustainable because by the time ANYONE actually buys this in a supermarket for a "reasonable" price it will be far too late to matter, especially because it won't be a gun-to-head decision so most will most likely not choose it right away, or even for quite some time, or at least consistently as it's supposed to be more tender.
    This is especially true because beef isn't the most common flesh served, and it's arguably the easiest to grow due to texture and other factors that would effect the "quality." So in other words, our oceans are corpses and we still have chickens.
    At this rate I can only hope aliens do exist and do decide to force-takeover us humans and make us a better species either through technology or through being forced away from this planet. Anytime aliens, we could use your help. t. public

    • Maybe there is a possibility to make it 'healthier'. Obviously this is still unknown and veganism is still healthier. But the meat that is produced doesn't contain any fat, so there's no saturated fat. In order to make it 'taste better', they do add fat, but this could also be omega-3.

      Also they could grown 'fish meat' and 'chicken meat', because those muscles also grow in a certain way, which they can replicate. Though once this becomes a massindustie, I'm not sure how much biopsies they need. But from what I read, they can grow one trillion muscle cells from one stemcell. This makes a lot of meat I believe, but I could be wrong. In that case there are not much biopsies needed.

      This faux meat will become cheaper and the regular meat will get a tag on it that it is harming the planet. People from then can choose on their own. But I agree, the world is being destroyed right now and something needs to be done fast. But I think this solution is faster than turning the entire world vegan, though more and more people are becoming vegan which is great!!
