Cycling newbie seeking advise

I just got a new pair of Specialized shoes today! Yay. However I do feel incredibly guilty and spoiled having my grandmother pay for it.

Anyway, I still need a lot of gear for road cycling and I'm really confused as to what I should get. I still use the helmet for my mountain bike, without the visor. I lost one of my old gloves so I need a new pair...and clothes, oh I'm going to bankrupt.

So without putting too big of a strain on my wallet, in what order should I buy my gear in and what should I get that fits my entry level/poor college kid budget? Also, are there any books and videos that you would recommend? Also, cheap computers please. :)

    • Thanks, I'll check them out.

  • I think the pants are more important than the top by far where clothing is concerned to cushion your buns.  I wouldn't survive without mine.  Also top priority for me is a light on the front in case I go out before sunrise to avoid traffic and of course a puncture kit.  Otherwise, the helmet you already have and the gloves are an added bonus.  When you're flush, you may want to consider a drink bottle holder, the top part of your outfit, maybe a speed/distance recorder... hope this helps.

    • Thanks for the advice. What brand of shorts do you have? And do you prefer bibs or just regular shorts?
