Do you have to peel your dates?

Was wondering if you are supposed to take the skin off your dates, or if it was just a preference?  Was always doing it with the medjool dates I got, but I got some deglet noor, and it was so hard to get the skin off.

So what does everybody else do?  Oh, also if your going to blend them, what do you do?

  • Freelee was my date the other night. I peeled her off when we got back home.

  • I eat Mazafati dates and when they're ripe and nice, their skin is super easy to remove -  it kind of disconnects itself from the flesh which leaves a layer of air in between and makes it the most natural thing to peel it off. But thanks to this thread now I will know what to do if I get dates that aren't as easy to skin :-)

    • Thanks for your input. I was indeed particularly curious about the all praised Medjool. It's also quite surprising to me how cheap Mazafatis seem to be everywhere. Here I get a kilo of them for €2.50 from wholesalers (granted, they're not organic but they do taste like heaven). The Sair ones were at about €7.50. It appears that a correlation between price and quality/taste isn't a given.

        I wish I could find Mazafatis at this price ! :-O Even not organic, I don't mind. I usually get organic Mazafatis from datecoop.com at around 6.5€ but they are currently around 10€, too much for my wallet ! Same for Sukkaris. And I just got some Medjools from my local at 12€ but it's the last time I buy them, really not worth it in my opinion !

        • They were actually larger than the Mazafatis (at least the ones we get here) but that didn't help much. The taste was mediocre at best and felt like an insult to datekind since I had the Mazafati to compare to. It lacked the depth and range and freshness, basically tasted like some boring artificial sugar with a weird consistency, with that one slight but noticeable hint of fermentation. They seemed to have been left in the sun for longer than the M. since they had that crystalized sugar on top and I assume that's just the Sair way (or maybe that's also how you get Mazafatis in other places?). So logically it also didn't have the juiciness of M., taste-wise too if that makes sense. Overall they performed poorer but felt heavier somehow.

          Regarding the price - well that's what I get for living on the Balkans xD A lot of things suck but hey, dates are cheap.
    • Their skin is too rough for my taste. Though I agree that Mazafatis are totally lovable and it's so hard to imagine a more delicious date than a good, juicy, sugary, caramelly Mazafati. I wonder what other sorts taste like - I've only tried Sair apart from M. and it was disastrous.
      • It's difficult to describe their taste... I tried 4 varieties so far, my order of preference is:

        1- Mazafati

        2- Deglet Nour (it's difficult to get good quality ones though)

        3- Sukkari

        4- Medjool (I don't understand why they cost so much, they rate low in my book)

  • This is a few years later but I have been wondering the same thing! They blend much better without the skin and they have been upsetting my gastro tract with the skin on. Soooo glad I got this figured out.
