I have been diagnosed with "tennis elbow" and "hip bursitis".  My doctor told is was caused by overuse from exercise.  This is probably true. I was working out 5 to 6 days a week, primarily high intensity routines with little to no rest between workouts.  I also ignored the pain for 2 months before seeking medical advise.  The treatment was 1200mg of motrin or advil daily, absolutely no exercise that uses my left arm, and rest for 6 - 8 weeks.

Well, I tried the motrin for 3 days and dropped it.  I have reduced my workouts to 3 days a week - only Zumba fitness, indoor cycling and walking my dog.  Needless-to-say, I am not happy!!!  The hip bursitis flares up the next day after the aerobic exercise.  I'm going to see an orthopedic doctor next week.  The pain is getting unbearable.

However, I was doing some research to find a natural remedy and stumbled across information stating that consuming nightshade fruits and vegs may contribute to joint pain.  The nightshade foods are:  Potatoes, tomatoes, many species of sweet and hot peppers (all species of Capsicum, including Capsicum annum), eggplant, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, cayenne, and Tabasco sauce.

The only nightshades that I eat on my HCRV diet are tomatoes and sweet peppers.  They make up the bulk of my green salads (minus the greens of course).  In addition, so many 'dressings' and 811 entrees use tomatoes and/or sweet peppers.  Please note: I do not own a blender or food processor, so every meal is eaten in its natural state.  I use 1 avocado for salad dressing.  If I remove the tomatoes and sweet peppers, there not much left in the salad.

Has anyone ever eliminated nightshades foods and gotten relief from your joint pain?

Thank you.

  • Hi there,

I used to suffer from terrible joint pain and arthritis which were really debilitating. Since changing my diet I no longer have any problems at all. Nightshades were a big factor for me, as well as grains ( which obviously aren't part of this diet anyway). I would give it a go cutting nightshades out and see if after a couple of weeks you feel better. Try using cucumber and mango in salads instead - these work great :)

Take care and feel free to ask if you have any more questions :)

    Esperanza xxx
