I am someone who is deeply interested in alkaloids. I do not want to make trouble I just want to know what foods do you recommend we eat on a hcrv diet? I've seen several places, such as the banned list and videos, how alkaloids are present in foods and we should avoid them. I know alkaloids are natural pesticide and its part of the co evolution of plants and animals. Plants produces a chemical which kills predators and the predators eventually evolve causing the plants to evolve a new form of alkaloid and so on. I think the only thing that deems a plant a higher plant is secondary metabolites, their alkaloids, are you suggesting we eat only lower plants?  I don't think bananas fall in that category, but moss does. I do believe all plants are alive and wish to live more than to be a food, which makes sense as to why they have alkaloids. Aside from being a respirtarian I do not see a way around eating alkaloids. What to you makes an alkaloid bad aside from being present?

Thanks for your time!

  • I reread the post on peppers and realized it did specify "harmful alkaloids" I had just noticed it was all over the cacao video and it struck me as odd the first time I read the list. I do make a point, when my dad says not to go out picking plants to eat a poisonous one, to say all plants are poisonous to a degree.

I study them to study them, not specificly for concerns in my nutrition. great pun it was easy enough to crack that nut :P. I do appreciate the diet tip, Ive been trying to keep it raw but my sister wont quit cooking me "raw" foods. So no kale or spinach at all or not as a lettuce substitute?

    Banned List?

First of all, if you dont mind, please point out on the 30BaD banned list where we specifically state anything against alkaloids so that I can discuss further why or why not it may have been there.

    Alkaloids

The topic of alkaloids is a very broad topic since they can be made/metabolized by plants and animals, as well as having different molecular structures.  Depending on the alkaloid and or plant/animal it is coming from and what species is consuming it, the alkaloid could be poisonous, medicinal both in a pharmaceutical and recreational sense, and may be even somewhat beneficial to the organism.

So we should not restrict foods because of the fact they contain alkaloids as many if not most foods do contain some alkaloids in various forms and amounts.

While the study of alkaloids is interesting, it is a rabbit trail you may not want to spend too much time on if you are concerned about your own health and nutrition.

Rather, for your own health and or figuring out what you should eat, look at the big picture, and try to look at species that are close to us for example like primates such as great Apes and what they eat and what their habits are.  Then you can look at what medical and nutritional experts and studies teach us about what is good for us.  Then you can experiment for yourself.

I have been on this path since 2009, and have been a moderator here for about three years now.  I can share with you what works diet wise based on personal experience, experience in troubleshooting the diet with other members, as well as independent medical and nutritional research.

To summarize a HCRV diet in a nutshell, pun intended,

Focus on a frugivorous diet, that is raw ripe fruits supplemented with some lettuce greens and nuts and seeds.

The following formula works well for long term health and success:

    Diet in a Banana Peel

Eat a raw frugivore diet where most carbohydrates and calories come from whole raw ripe sweet and juicy fruits like oranges, papaya, or mangoes, supplemented with about ½-2 heads of lettuce greens a day (not kale, chard, and spinach) and about a handful of raw nuts or seeds a day. Eat simple meals but a rainbow of foods over a period of time.

Eat enough on a daily basis with at least 2500 calories for females and at least 3000 calories for males.  Drink 2-4 quarts of water a day and pee clear. Get 8-12 hours of sleep as needed. Exercise about 30 minutes a day 5-6 days a week with at least one day off for rest and repairs.  Get about 30 minutes of sunshine a day on your skin for vitamin D, mental health, eye health, and healthy bones and teeth.
