Hello friends. In additon to enjoying hclfrv/vegan reference books, I am an avid reader of fiction and have found it annoying when the only vegan characters in books are depicted as unhealthy weirdos, eating unappetising food! Recently I did a search for books with vegan characters and came up with this short list.

https://bookshop.org/lists/vegan-fiction-books-about-vegans-and-books-for-vegans

I found one of the above books through my online library and have it on hold. Do any of you have names of other fiction books you would recommend? ...and of course fiction books with characters eating raw would be fabulous, but perhaps they are yet to be written.

(If this post doesn't follow site guidelines, let me know.)

Thanks!

I pray my health and behavior changes will hopefully bring them over there, but right now, I'm focusing on caring for me. That being said...

I seem to go into a mild Anaphylaxis (tongue swelling, itchy throat and ears, etc) whenever I eat bananas or any pitted fruit (peaches, cherries, dates, plums, etc...) This is harsh for me because I LOVE fruit and I am wondering if my allergy is just simply from decades of poor health and eating, along with all the crap they add in foods these days. Can an allergy like this be reversed? I would love to hear stories about this because I'm not going down without a fight. I WANT to eat these fruits....

I am also throwing up a disclaimer right now that anyone commenting on this is not a doctor, nor is giving any information on cures. I am desperate to eat healthier, and I feel freaking defeated whenever I try to eat this fruit. :(

Thanks in advance! :D

Bridget

I have been traveling around looking for a place, and there has been bumps along the way. I would like to check out Nicaragua for a potential spot, but it would be so nice to create this place together with someone like-minded. The main plan is to buy some land, not to far from the ocean for surfing possibilities. Growing food, offgrid, have a river close by for water and cleaning would be awesome. Then in the future when we have enough food to share, welcome people who are sick and want to get well. Donationbased. Also maybe host retreats of different kinds.

A disturbing trend over the past couple of decades is the ongoing proliferation of human trafficking and slavery. It’s well known that de facto slavery conditions exist in a number of industries, such as for children on cocoa plantations in Africa, and carpet, clothing, and electronics factories in India and elsewhere, men on fishing boats in southeast Asia, and millions of women and children in the sex slave trade internationally, including in the U.S. and Europe.

Researchers studying the problem report that there are vast sex trafficking rings throughout the U.S. that prey especially on children, and that the problem is under-reported and difficult to stop due to corruption and profiteering in law enforcement and the courts, as well as in governmental agencies that deal with children.

According to a recent study reported in USA Today, youth and child sex slaves are forced to have sex on average over five times daily and there are hundreds of thousands of adults who are buying sex with children, and who are rarely brought to trial. In a recent case, a man who was arrested was asked about his conscience, and if he felt any remorse for the terrible damage that he was causing children by buying and having sex with them. His response was telling: “I don’t want to know how the sausage is made.”

Years ago, I wrote an article titled “The Most Pervasive Form of Child Abuse” published in the June 2001 issue of VegNews before it was a magazine, contending that being compelled as children to eat the flesh and secretions of animals not only harms us physically, but psychologically and morally as well. With every meal, we’re consuming a narrative of materialism, reductionism, and exploitation of the weak by the strong. The subtext is, “Don’t make the connection.” “Stay shallow and don’t see deeply, feel deeply, or care deeply. It’s just an object: a burger, an egg, a breast, a wing, a piece of cheese.”

We are all profoundly wounded by being born and raised in a culture organized around animal agriculture, which is, at its core, a relentless and ritualized sexual attack on the sacred feminine dimension of life, specifically on females, mothers, and offspring. The core practice of animal agriculture is forcibly impregnating females and sexually abusing and killing the beings who are the result of raping them. This is happening millions of times daily; it’s the hidden dark side of our culture. We are compelled from infancy to not only participate and pay for this, and thus cause this ongoing tsunami of sexual violence, but also to then actually eat it and routinely feed it to our unsuspecting children. This injects them with the same toxins and wounds that have been perverting us and hijacking our awareness for generations now, driving ten thousand years of war and patriarchal oppression.

The wisdom at the heart of world’s spiritual traditions is basically unanimous: whatever we sow, we will reap. How can we ever expect that we as human beings are worthy of a culture that is free of slavery and the sexual trafficking and abuse of women and children when we are enslaving billions of nonhuman animals and sexually abusing the females and their offspring? It’s well understood that all the female cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, sheep, goats, and other animals who are imprisoned for food and other products are forced into pregnancy on what the industry terms the “rape rack” when they are mere children in human terms. Cutting costs in every way possible, the industry minimizes feed costs by manipulating young females into early pregnancy through drugs, hormones, and selective breeding.

Our efforts to curb and stop human trafficking are merely ironic in the face of the massive industrialized and invisibilized trafficking of animals that pervades and defines our culture. Going vegan and understanding the deep connections between animal abuse and human abuse is a significant contribution to the healing and resolution of the human slavery and trafficking problem that causes untold misery and suffering in our world. Until we publicly proclaim and explain these connections and they become part of our social conversation, we will never make meaningful progress in our quest for justice and respect in our human world. Eating and buying animal foods and products always requires trafficking and sexual abuse of animals, on both small backyard operations as well as on large-scale factory farms. This injustice permeates every cell of animal flesh, cheese, wool, leather, and egg, and screams for our attention, to wake us up from the cultural trance into which we’ve been indoctrinated, and to heal the traumatic wounds that have been inflicted on us by animal agriculture. The vulnerable—animals and children—always bear the brunt of the full fury of our desensitization and delusion.

There is only one way forward. Human liberation is impossible without animal liberation. There will never be any human justice without justice for animals. The fact that in the thousands of pages of writing about human trafficking and sexual abuse of women and children, there is virtually no mention of the propelling force—the massive trafficking and sexual abuse of animals—demonstrates how deluded, indoctrinated, and blinded we are by our culture’s food rituals. It’s long past time to speak up and embody the truth of compassion and justice for all living beings, and for all mothers and all the children of all species, so that we are finally worthy as a species to live in greater harmony on this beautiful and beleaguered Earth.

This Mother’s Day, let’s remember the millions of animal mothers whose babies are stolen and killed to be eaten and used, and let’s reflect on the ongoing trafficking and sexual abuse of men, women, and children in our culture, and discuss these connections with our friends and family. Slavery begets more slavery. Freedom requires us to question the indoctrinated narratives justifying our exploitation of animals, and to do our best to embody kindness and respect for all. We can all contribute our voices and actions and help build the positive future for all beings that is beckoning.

Animal acupuncturists and chiropractics have done just that. Watch the below videos for an in-depth explanation on why these practices on animals is immoral.

"In fact, other than testimonials, there’s really no good evidence that acupuncture does work in animals. Of the adverse effects documented in humans, the most significant is that of strokes associated with cervical manipulation.(8) There is no research evaluating the direct risks of veterinary chiropractic, so we can only speculate on the safety of spinal manipulation for animal patients."Veterinary Chiropractic

Brennen McKenzie on April 12, 2013

The lack of evidence for these techniques on animals in appalling.

Often, I am presented when making my arguments that my source is bias. I can understand in this age of information overload and misinformation doubting information that seems bias. This is where factcheckers are very useful.

I found an article on thoughtco.com which is both least bias and very high factual reporting.

"

LEAST BIASED

These sources have minimal bias and use very few loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes). The reporting is factual and usually sourced. These are the most credible media sources. See all Least Biased Sources.

Factual Reporting: VERY HIGH

Notes: ThoughtCo is an educational website that answers questions on a large list of topics that range from science, history, religion and current issues. "

Now people who doubt the existence of factory farming will have one less weapon in their arsenal. Doubters will no longer be able to hide behind the "your source is bias, therefore I do not believe you."

"Factory farming is the modern practice of raising animals for food in extreme confinement, in order to maximize profits. In addition to intense confinement, abuses usually associated with factory farming include massive doses of hormones and antibiotics, battery cages, debeaking, tail docking, gestation crates, and veal crates. The animals spend their entire lives in these miserable conditions until they are slaughtered. Their suffering is unimaginable."

I feel better myself. I guess I had some level of doubt still that factory farming existed and that I was accidentally spreading a falsehood. I am very grateful to 30bananasaday and many other vegan advocates for raising awareness to this unethical, institutionalized, and systemic abuse of animals.

Source.

https://www.thoughtco.com/factory-farming-faq-127724

https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/thoughtco/

I've been spending a lot of time and energy trying to understand why the vegan movement is languishing. Yes, we have made some real gains and they should be celebrated. Yet, we have a lot more progress to be made.

I've started reading this article about sweatshops, and it reminded me of veganism.

Here's the conclusion of the article. What the below means is we must go far beyond personal shopping choices. A handful of people choosing to shop vegan will help, but can only go so far. We are dealing with a system of oppression. Animals are oppressed systemically and institutionally. I highly recommend the Gender Knot by Allan G. Johnson to help understand how to fight against a system of oppression.

"We are not going to shop ourselves into a better world. Advocating for boring stuff like complaint mechanisms and formalized labor contracts is nowhere near as satisfying as buying a pair of Fair Trade sandals or whatever. But that’s how the hard work of development actually gets done: Not by imploring people to buy better, but by giving them no other option. After all, that naked protest of Old Navy in the '90s? Behind the 50 demonstrators, a line of 300 customers stretched
around the block." Michael Hobbes The Myth of the ethical Shopper.

Source.

https://highline.huffingtonpost.com/articles/en/the-myth-of-the-ethical-shopper/

I wrote a few pieces on vegan advocacy on www.ThoseCrazyVegans.net I would love to share here.

Getting Started as a Vegan Advocate

When we awaken to veganism, especially for ethical concern for other beings, we usually want to do something to share the message with others. There are many great resources out there that will further not only our knowledge of animal agriculture and veganism, but also how to promote veganism.

As stated in the Vegan Advocacy Support page, there may be vegan organizations, groups, and restaurants in or around your area, and many online resources that can help support one to becoming and staying vegan and to connect with other like-minded people.

How to Create the Perfect Vegan Life is an excellent short resource on understanding why it is vital that we all become vegan advocates and how to avoid burnout while creating a perfect vegan life. Other resources on vegan advocacy are books by Casey Taft, PhD, Motivational Methods for Vegan Advocacy and Millennial Vegan.

There are countless ways one can promote veganism. It can be mind boggling on how many choices and approaches there are. One can host a film screening or talk with Q&A afterward, a peaceful, non-violent demonstration, or they can start their own vegan group or organize an event, amongst many others. The possibilities are endless. You could also create a YouTube channel, write books or blog on veganism, combine vegan advocacy through drawing, painting or photography, or even start a restaurant or store. Again, the possibilities are endless. Anything is achievable, and only through our intuition, will we know our unique way of spreading the word.

One aspect of veganism many people talk about is how does one go about earning money just from promoting veganism alone. So you talk to a friend or family member about veganism and why you went vegan, but you don’t make a living from that? And sometimes that can be frustrating. As animal advocates, most have no clue as to how to earn money promoting veganism. Though our focus should not be solely on income, people need to make a living in order to survive. To learn how, we highly suggest reading the book, How to Create the Perfect Vegan Life.

Organizations and Meetups

Getting involved, sharing your voice, and finding like-minded people can be a challenge for a lot of people. As a vegan, it’s no different. Sometimes it can seem impossible to find anyone around who doesn’t still think they’re an omnivore, but with just a little bit of effort, we can discover all kinds of ways to expand our world without giving up our dedication to living a compassionate life.

Countless organizations all over the world focus on supporting vegan issues and spreading the philosophy of kindness. Joining up with established groups of advocates is a good way of making new friends, share your ideas, and get the word out about the urgency of people adopting the vegan lifestyle. Often these organizations host meetings, outreach opportunities, and other events where they collaborate, synergize, and bond with other people who hold similar values.

Click here to search for organizations in your area or around the world, or here to learn how to get started as a vegan advocate.

One excellent way to find vegan movers and shakers is through websites like Meetup.com. It’s free to join and search for people hosting interest-specific events in your area, so by searching the term “vegan” you can often find folks to get together with who are creating or going to potlucks, movie nights, expos, educational, advocacy-based, and other types of events. This is an excellent way to make new friends in your home town or while traveling and learning about what others are doing to help end cruelty to animals.

Vegans never stand alone; we are growing in numbers and getting stronger every day! The more we all create and participate in vegan-based activities the more we can band together to help spread the message of kindness and compassion far and wide.

Vegan Support

In a world of immense suffering and violence and with friends and families criticizing and justifying their actions, it seems that some vegans have nowhere to turn for support. They do not know any other vegans and find being in this world, a lonely and sad place. Some vegans become depressed and angry and may go back to eating all sorts of animal foods.

It is crucial, especially for new vegans, we get all the help and support we need from other vegans. There are a few resources for doing this. In your area or the nearest major city, there may be vegan societies or associations, groups, restaurants, or events, where you can meet and find some of the loveliest people who can guide and help you on your way to a vegan life. However, if there is nothing in your area, you can search for online vegan groups, organizations, or events through social media websites such as meetup.com or Facebook.

IDA (In Defense of Animals) also has an Animal Activist Helpline for animal rights and vegan support. We highly recommend this free service.

Number – 1-800-705-0425 (Toll-Free Canada/US)
Website – Click Here

Veganism and Social Justice

Veganism is a social justice issue. It is also based on love and compassion for all expressions of life. Veganism is also connected to every other issue. No issue or sentient being is ever separate. Everything is interconnected and interrelated in some way. There is, however, a tiny percent of vegans who tend not to include certain humans, or every human, in their sphere of kindness. And even though The Vegan Society defines veganism to only include animals (nonhuman that is), Those Crazy Vegans includes all sentient beings in the context of veganism and this site.

Therefore, we must understand what the core issue of every oppression is. May that be, women’s rights, black rights, LGBTQIA rights, or environmental rights, they are all cut from the same cloth. All tyrannies are intricately linked to one another and are not separate issues. There is only one underlining cause to all of the world’s problems and every social justice issue, which we are, or have been faced with. But it is not that simple to recognize and awaken to the interconnectedness of all life and how it directly relates to human wrongs. It is because we are all programmed since birth to view animals as food and property, which goes against our heart’s values of loving-kindness. Because we were taught as young children to consume the flesh and secretions of brutally tortured animals, we tend to exhibit the same violence and terror either internally, on ourselves, to other beings, or both. Though not everyone who consumes animal-based foods will cause direct harm to another being, pre-vegans (or non-vegans), tend to foster more negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, judgment, fear, illnesses, hate, etc., within themselves.

All over the world, wars are raging, racism and oppression abound. If we take a close look at the oppressors and see what they eat, they virtually always consume animal-based foods of some sort. You will hardly ever see vegans causing harm or supporting wars and destruction. It is because veganism is love, and if we want to live in a world of love, we must embrace this caring way of life.

But what does veganism have to do with human rights? Are Those Crazy Vegans really up to something?

When a person ceases to exploit animals and stops eating and using them, they become a highly spiritual being, who no longer wishes to harm anyone, human or otherwise. When we feel love for all expressions of life, we easily acknowledge that we must strive to cause the least harm that we possibly can. Of course, none of us are perfect, and there will be times when we inadvertently cause some harm, but we must understand that we need to continue improving and attempt to cause less violence. As more of us become vegan, there will be fewer people who will be oppressed. The only way to create a true world at peace is when we all work together to end every form of oppression. It starts with each one of us, therefore, making veganism the ultimate protest to a better world for all.
-------------------

Thank you for all you do to help the nonhuman animals, the Earth, each other, and to further the vegan cause. :)

I've learned that to effectively speak up for animals a person must learn to deliver potent arguments. From the course I took at Edx.org about climate change denial, I've found out how to present better arguments.[0]

The main issue with vaccines is animal cruelty and testing. An animal rights advocate must focus on the strongest part of the argument holding the moral high ground. Yet, some people still hold onto much weaker arguments.

We must discard the weakest links in the anti-vaccine debate. That is autism and disease. I've done a lot of research and at first I believed that vaccines caused autism. Yet, I am a fallible human being. I was using a form of cognitive bias called conformation bias. I wanted vaccines to cause autism because I am an animal right advocate. Nevertheless, I came to a conclusion first and then looked for evidence to back up my conclusion. A true skeptic or scientist performs the opposite, weighting the evidence and then forming a conclusion.

After weighting the evidence I've come to the conclusion that vaccines do not cause autism and overall do more good than harm in regards to humans. Vaccines save human lives, but at the cost of animal lives. That being said, when making an argument you must decide if you want to take the abolitionist or the animal welfare approach.

An abolitionist approach would be to ban animal testing in the research and development of vaccines. An animal welfare approach would be to lessen the suffering inflicted upon animals in the name of vaccine testing.

Why not throw everything in but the kitchen sink?

There will always be some doubt on any major scientific issue, creationism, climate change, and vaccines. So, why not use vaccine deniers' arguments? Here's the problem, humans don't think logically. If you give someone a thousand dollars in scenario A versus giving a person a thousand dollars and a 5 cent off coupon for tissues in scenario B, the person will value scenario A over B.

The same goes with applicants. Applicant X is a person who got perfect SAT scores. Applicant Y also got perfect SAT scores and also worked as a McDonald's cashier for a week. Applicant X will win, because the much less impressive quality diminishes the impressive achievement.

I'm sure there is some fancy scientific term for what I am describing, I will try to look up the term later. Furthermore, by throwing in the autism argument against vaccines we are effectively incriminating the wrong cause. This allows the real cause of the increase in autism to go unchecked. The real cause of autism increases is air pollution from traffic and broader detection.

"Being exposed to high levels of air pollution from traffic may raise the risk of autism, researchers say."
Kathleen Doheny WebMd [1]

"
It was developed a few years ago to detect broader signs of language or developmental delays." nbcsandiego.com [2]

To continue to blame vaccines for autism not only weakens your argument but is immoral because it allows the real culprit to go free. Yes, the evidence is leaning towards the fossil fuel industry not vaccines. Furthermore, some of the test done to promote the alleged link between autism and vaccines are cruel to animals. Yes, that's right by stubbornly reinforcing this link, you are causing additional suffering to animals. This is the opposite of vegan.

Below is a quote about how mice are abused due to anti-vaccine research, having technical difficulties the quote might not show.

"

Torturing mice, data, and figures in the name of antivaccine pseudoscience" [3] David Gorski on October 30, 2017 sciencebasedmedicine.org

"

Three dozen dead monkeys later, vaccines still don’t cause autism" [4] David Gorski on October 5, 2015

To make matters even worse when arguing against vaccines incorrectly, vaccines save human lives.

"

Vaccines given to infants and young children over the past two decades will prevent 322 million illnesses, 21 million hospitalizations and 732,000 deaths over the course of their lifetimes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Vaccines also will have saved $295 billion in direct costs, such as medical expenses, and a total of more than $1.3 trillion in societal costs over that time," [5]

Liz Szabo, USA TODAY Published 1:00 p.m. ET April 24, 2014 | Updated 6:53 p.m. ET April 24, 2014

Arguing against animal testing in vaccines

The correct and most effective way to argue against vaccines is the animal testing that is involved. This is the weakest point of the pro-vaccine argument. We have a finite amount of time on this Earth, and we cannot afford to waste time on ineffective arguments.

"
Around 5 million animals including mice, rats, fish, chickens, rabbits, dogs and primates are used across the EU for this purpose each year. " [6]

"
As well as pain and distress from the scientific procedures used, animals will suffer from the symptoms of the disease or condition that is being studied. Healthy animals are also then used to assess the safety of any treatments developed before trials are done on humans or on farm or pet animals. Animals are usually killed at the end of the tests. " [6]

"
According to a report in the British newspaper The Independent, one conclusion from the failed study was that “testing HIV vaccines on monkeys before they are used on humans, does not in fact work.”(11)
These are not anomalies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated, “Currently, nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on laboratory and animal studies.”(12)" [7]
As you can read above, animal testing is the giant in the room.

Conclusions

In conclusion, vaccines save human lives at the cost of animal lives. Autism is most likely caused by air pollution from traffic and broader detection in lieu of vaccines. Continuing to spread the rumor of the connection between autism and vaccines empowers a community that hurts animals more with redundant animal testing as well as weakening your argument. Much animal testing of drugs and procedures does not equate to adequate testing, because humans are different than non-human animals.

Instead, we need to focus on drawing attention to the cruelty and ineffectiveness of animal testing. Whether you personally decide to go for animal welfare, reducing pain to animals in animal testing or abolitionist, calling for the complete end to animal testing is a personal choice, both are needed and should work together for the benefit of animals. Ideally, we would find a solution like lab grown meat to test vaccines that would eliminate the suffering of animals. At the same time, we would reap the benefits of vaccines.

Personally, I've debated the vaccine issue and found I turn more heads when I talk about the animal cruelty of vaccines and only inspire ire when I talk about the autism side.

Sources
0. https://www.edx.org/course/making-sense-of-climate-science-denial
1. https://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/news/20121121/air-pollution-autism-risk#1
2. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/health/24-Questions-Could-Detect-Autism-Study-120866129.html
3. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/torturing-mice-data-and-figures-in-the-name-of-antivaccine-pseudoscience/
4. https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/antivaccine-activists-fund-a-study-to-show-vaccines-cause-autism-it-backfires-spectacularly/
5. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/04/24/cdc-vaccine-benefits/8094789/
6. https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/laboratory/medicinesandvaccines
7. https://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/animals-used-experimentation-factsheets/animal-experiments-overview/

Hey Guys,

I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to know what do you guys think is the best way to make a difference as a vegan? I've pondered this question for a long time and always am because it's the most important thing for me, to make a difference. I've asked couple of President of non-profits like MFA, Farm Sanctuary, Vegan Outreach, etc and I read a book called "Being Great At Doing Good" by Nick Cooney, a guy from MFA that talks about the subject and from what I've taken from these conversations was that starting a business and giving my money to non-profits, could make a really big impact, a bigger one than possibly going to be a speaker and talk about animal rights. I've always been interested in starting a business, but this made me realize that I could serve the animals while doing it. The speaker routes seem interesting as well and the great Gary Yourofsky in a total inspiration because he made more of a difference than a lot of organizations in my opinion, but I don't know anyone else that has had as close to as much success him, so that's why I think that going and starting a business might be a better way. Besides that, there's nothing that prevents you from speaking animal rights even though you're starting a business. I just want to serve the animals as best as I can because the truth of the matter is that when I die, I want to be remembered as someone who cared for animals and that did his best to save as many of them, that's the most important thing for me. I wanted to get your guys opinion on the subject.

Thanks a lot and have an amazing night,

Claude

The heart is what contains human emotion, including love and compassion. Though humanity wants world peace, we can’t seem to live peacefully amongst one another. Religious institutions, schools and educational systems, military and governments have done little to nothing to end the violence. Love is the solution, yet we continue to justify the violence. Why is this? The Lost Love examines why we lost our innate love for all life, and what we can do to reawaken it within us, and cultivate that to the rest of the world.

About the Author

Michael Lanfield is the #1 Amazon best-selling author of The Interconnectedness of Life and The Journey and also the author of The Lost Love. He is also a vegan educator, filmmaker, and certified World Peace Diet Facilitator. He has been featured on dozens of FM/AM radio stations, podcasts, various websites, magazines, and media outlets, spreading the vegan message to millions of people around the world. Inspired by Dr. Will Tuttle and Mango Wodzak, his talks are informative, inspiring, and interactive.

Published By:

We Are Interconnected

www.weareinterconnected.com

info@weareinterconnected.com

Tracklist

1.
