I've heard scoliosis can be vastly improved with fasting Im sure it could help my issues. Also I have just learned I have calcium deposits on my ribs. I will start another thread for that.

Thank you

Hi, my girlfriend decided to do a one-fruit fast (watermelon) every sunday as a first step towards water fasting but it went wrong the first attempt, the second, third, fourth... Strong headaches were experienced along with nauseas and weaknesses. She couldn't handle it so at 6pm we decided to break the one-fruit fast with a little of boiled sweet potato and boiled pinto beans with onion. *We are now in Mexico so we go for local food.

If you ask "Why did she do it more than once?" The answer its because symptoms were significantly similar to those of detoxification, very intense in her case. So we thought it was a good idea to make an intermittent fast of 12 hours everyday plus the sundays one-fruit fast (watermelon) until the amount of toxins decreases and thus she would be able to make a water fast for more than 3-4 days, but still, she can't get through 20 hours one-fruit fast. And we are worried about it. Specially me, because I strongly believe in the power of fasting.

Ive documented myself with various fasting books and guides for my own benefit, completing a 6 day water fast before starting a raw plant based diet 811, 2 years ago, or fruitarian as they call it.

My girlfriends background.

She've been vegetarian for 15 years, 4 as a vegan and raw till 4 since we met (almost a year ago).

She have always had lymphatic issues as her feet and hands are always cold (in semi-cold countries).

She also has some issues on the daily amount of excretion.

Cigarette smoker for over 5 years.

No other disorders have ever appeared in blood or urine tests.

I understand every body is different and reacts differently specially when it comes to fasting, so Im not expecting a final answer but rather an idea of people who have studied the field and would like to share their thoughts or experiences.

I very much appreciate your time and shares.

With love, Zeus & Alexia.

Peace!

I've been on the high carb low fat vegan lifestyle for about 3 months and my hormones are still very unbalanced. I still have skin problems, no period and mood swings. I've been gaining weight primarily over my waist making me look like a rectangle and making me feel very not sexy, but I know this is all part of recovery and if I stick with it long enough that it will go away. I've been reading a bit into water fasting and how to let the body heal itself fully and I was curious as to if this is a good idea for hormonal problems and will it help my body really take the time to heal itself and help me cure my acne and get my period back? What are everyone else's thoughts?I was thinking only a week long fast in a secure environment, would this even help?

I find it hard to get up in the morning and often feel troubled keeping myself motivated. I experience intense addictions to food.
I feel as if I want to run but can only walk in slow-motion. I experience bad skin, bloated belly and brain fog.

Since encountering two different parasites during my stay in East-Africa, and taking antibiotics in an attempt to get rid of them, my eating habits have been anything but stable.
I have not been eating fully raw, fully low fat, nor organic.

I'm considering doing a blood test. A few questions here:
- what should I test for?
- how trustworhty are blood-level tests? should i take cellular tests?
- where to test? (i'm located in rotterdam, the netherlands)
- any idea on prices?

I'm also considering doing a fast. I have a few concerns:
- how will it effect my metabolism? I am afraid I will gain a lot of weight when starting to eat again
- will it help me absorb nutrients better?
- how will it effect my energy level?
- where to fast?
- how long to fast?

Any other thoughts/tips/ideas/experiences to share?

<3

I bought like 7bananas friday when these were still green, now these are almost ripe. I have two carrots and also today I soaked some mung beans what should be ready(sprouts) tomorrow. Anyway I have done 3day fast before but I always ate too much afterwards and got bloated for a long time. I would like to come out this time properly and avoid these cravings. I did everything before and after on raw food. Now im in south Thailand so would be great if you can suggest local seasonal stuff(mangos, durian, bananas etc) for next days. Can I eat durian in few days or it's bad idea as it contains so much fat?Im staying in "Sanctuary Resort Thailand" so if anybody knows about this menu then can suggest something. They have big choice of raw desserts also. Is it very bad if I will eat those on my second day when coming out?Thank u :)

Looking back at my last blog post, i was struggling so badly. A few months after that i went to the Woodstock Fruit Festival 2012. I met the most amazing people and made life-long friends. I had some of the best experiences and listened to the best lectures. My fruity friend Dot and I were keen on going to Dr Graham's "Fasting" Lecture. We had both been struggling, and for me personally i couldnt stand the chronic pain i had been dealing with for the past 5/6 years. As soon as the lecture was over, Dot and I both thought and said at the same time "We have to go. This is the answer."

Using the Law of Attraction, i brought what i wanted/needed into my life. I was able to go fast with Dr Graham in Costa Rica, January 2013. I fasted on water only for 25 days, and it completely changed my life. I was in the most beautiful setting, around the most knowledgable, compassionate, and helpful people, and doing the best thing for my body. I had struggled so badly for a good year and 4 months, binging every single day. I learned exactly what i needed to, one-on-one with Dr Graham. I had so many fears, but the only thing to fear is fear itself. Dot and I both experienced this fast together, as roomies, i love her to death and wouldnt have wanted to experience it with anyone else <3 .

After this amazing experience, i have been smooth sailing. I have been 100% 80-10-10. I am so ecstatic. No more constant guilt/feeling ashamed every single day from what i had eaten. No more hiding from the world. No more chronic migraines. No more symptoms of even having Endometriosis. 100% 80-10-10 since Jan 1 2013. The feeling is amazing. I know so many people on this thread tried to help me but i had dug myself in such a deep hole and i couldnt climb my way out with all of the ropes you were all throwing me. Sitting here happily eating a big bowl of "Strawberry Rice Pudding" , smiling and chewing. I needed to be completely out of my life here at home, which is exactly what was able to happen in Costa Rica. The whole experience was priceless and i am beyond grateful for it.

I want to thank those again who reached out with kind words and help, it meant a lot to me.

"Life is sweet, and it only gets sweeter" :D <3

My husband and I did 7 day no-overt fats, salt-free, only fruits and veggies a couple of weeks ago. I was actually ably to go for 11 days, but then I caved and ate some cooked rice and veggies, no salt but a little oil. They were some leftovers from the kids supper the day before, and it was a very disappointing experience. But I am just finding that I have no appetite, yet I am feeling so dragged out and run down. I am trying to focus on eating fruit, but the pickings are not great right now. Apples, pears, tasteless mangos, and bananas, which I have to be careful with as they tend to make me sleepy. I am just not feeling drawn to any of what is available right now. The cooked isn't anymore enticing, unless I douse it with oil and salt, which I don't want to do.

I went salt free for 3 months at the beginning of this year, and once I let a little bit slip back in, it all went downhill from there. And when hubby and I first went raw about 5 years ago, we just naturally were doing low fat, pretty much a large smoothie for breakfast and lunch and a large salad for dinner. We were using Udo's oil and avos, but were doing pretty well and felt really good. Then we started connecting with other raw fooders, and were introduced to the world of raw gourmet and started partaking in bulk nut and seed orders. Of course, we noticed we were not feeling as well, but didn't make the connection. We ended up eating cooked food again due to social pressure, people would feel so uncomfortable around us because we weren't eating what they were eating, and that is my weak spot. I don't like people to feel uncomfortable if I can help it.

I have never forgotten how good I felt when I first went all raw. I really want that back, but I am kind of at a loss of what to do. After much reading on this site, I realize the importance of not under-eating, but should I be forcing myself to eat if I am not really having the desire to? I did start out the 11 days with a short 24 hour water fast. I am not feeling particulaily drawn to do a longer water fast, but would that be a possible solution, perhaps to reset my body?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Jenny

OK, also water and air. But we call it water only fasting. This one is confusing in a lot of ways, in that I have not had my few hours of headache, my 3 days of worse-than-dragon-breath, 1 day of "fuzzy" teeth, any weakness, or so on. I did have the 2 days of "what am I doing, there are foods out there to eat". But my body is living off my fat, excess skin while it tightens, and I suspect is at times "burning" off some of the toxins that it cannot flush or push out.

The hardest part is the BOREDOM. As long as there is no aromatic cooked foods around, and I do not go into the market to shop for my wife, I'm fine. I do fix her a BIG, colorful fruit salad a day for work, (she is doing a 3 week cleanse while I'm fasting). I also make a pint to quart of fresh OJ every morning for her, her teas, and sometimes after work snacks--like avocado on non-wheat cracker, salads, etc...

By preparing the food, I've found it easier to fast, as a huge part of the boredom of not eating food is negated by preparing and serving it. Over the last 30 years I have not had problems with preparing and serving raw foods to my family while doing prolonged fasts.

I am not fasting to fast, there should be no reason for a long fast unless you have a debilitating health problem, and my over active adventure lifestyle has left me with a dozen, including spinal injuries, knee problems, peripheral neuropathy, badly damaged hearing and more. Last years fast almost wiped out the 30 or so minor to major problems I thought would be something to into my 60's with.

Go to my page and read my blogs if you want to know more about my recent previous fasts of 25 days (2009) 49 days (2011). The last one is still incomplete, due to trauma during re-feeding, having troubles communicating about.

I'll be starting a current blog for this fast. This fast is not going to be stellar in length due to several obligations, including one requiring grueling backpacking in mountains in early June in more than 10 feet of snow--without snowshoes, as it is too steep (another blog).

We can have discussions here, or can comment on my blog.

Almost 100% of those on 30bad are horribly misinformed on fasts, even those who have done 5-10 day ones. If you read books on it, you will understand what I mean.

Hey folks. Would LOVE your thoughts on this...!!!

I'm seriously considering a long-term water fast (5-30 days). The more I read about it the better it sounds & I'm feeling myself drawn naturally to the idea. Have naturally done some one-day (or at least no food but dinner) water fasts & they felt really good.

My two concerns:

1) Should I do it unsupervised? Many say a 5+ day (or even shorter) water fast should be supervised. I can't afford a fasting center right now. I'd be open to a by-phone fasting coach/forum or something but don't know of any. Ideally I'd spend no $ on this as $ is very tight. Plus, man, I really just want to TRUST my OWN self on it & good books & be SMART like by resting, sleeping & doing low-stress introspective stuff... standing up & moving carefully... baths instead of showers so no shower black-outs... lots of sunshine... light walking & yoga... stopping if heart races & whatnot... weening in & breaking it gently with strawberries... & any other tips I read from good fasting books (haven't read any yet - that's all info I've gotten online). They say hunger stops after day 3 & then energy is really nice so it's not that big a deal, right? I know it's a VERY serious, spiritual, near-death, re-set experience, but I mean my doing it unsupervised, if very mindful & educated, wouldn't be a huge deal, right?

2) Dreading the thought of weight loss. I'm skinny. Love my body but if anything I could afford to gain a bit of weight, not lose. I'm about 5'4", 104 lbs, small-boned with no excess fat except a tiny bit around my butt, thighs & tummy (which is more just lack of muscle tone). So I'm dreading the thought of losing lots of weight on the water fast... isn't a pound a day average? I'd be a skeleton after 10+ days! The weight's supposed to come back on quickly & evenly after breaking the fast but it'd be hard to look skeletal till then. Maybe just a tiny sacrifice to pay for all the things I expect it'll improve though (acne, constipation, gas, some fatigue despite much extra sleep, sporadic body rashes, very bloated tummy, heavy metal detox, other detox/healing).

By the way, I've been mostly lfrv/811 for maybe a couple months now & was eating mostly vegetarian & whole foods on-&-off for a couple years before that.

(Sorry if this post is long - can be a bit wordy & I'm still getting used to this forum.)

A friend introduced me to this article a while back, it really vibes with my intuition. Please take a read before contemplating a water fast.

http://www.frugivorelifestyle.com/Fasting.html

*Please note* This is not a post intended to put you off Dr D's fasting retreat, not at all but simply to present another side of the fasting coin and inspire discussion.

Fasting: A Dangerous Game

The practice of forced fasting is one of the most common methods used to assert human control over the physical body, and to "force" health into existence. If someone is feeling ill at ease, or sick, or has a lowered energy level, the advice given by many professionals is to "fast one's way to health." This usually involves the cessation of all solid food, for some arbitrary amount of time, until the subject has supposedly reached a point at which it is "time to eat again."

The practice of fasting is founded in a fundamental inability to accept that true health requires the steady and consistent application of habits and practices that are not possible to adapt overnight. Denial of this fact has resulted in severe and often deadly Ramifications for hundreds of individuals. Many of these people still have absolutely no idea that their long fast is responsible for their subsequent health problems or disordered eating. In fact, fasting has probably caused more people to fail at reaching a state of balanced and stable eating and living than any other "hygienic" practice. It is accurate to go so far as to say that for most people and in most situations’, fasting is a dangerous and harmful practice.

How can it be that the image and idea of fasting has taken root so strongly in the alternative health movement, if it is so harmful? First of all, it should be clear by now that all sorts of bizarre and demented practices are looked upon as healthful, and yet we don't question for a moment the fact that they are misguided or downright fraudulent. From the Ritalin prescribed to hyperactive children to the Cacao recommended for struggling raw foodists, most health seekers know that even the most popular recommendations are not always wise or helpful. Fasting is no different.

The reason that fasting is believed to be so miraculous is that it results in dramatic, sudden, unmistakable physiological transformations. These are mistaken for being signs of intense healing, when in fact they are simply severe adaptations to the sudden absence of fuel. There is no physical reason for the human body to initiate healing simply because one decides that they will deny themselves food. The human body is always healing and always rejuvenating to the best of its ability, and it never desires a willful denial of nourishment unless it truly needs one. This point is key, for one of the most common advertising ploys for the practice of fasting is to point out proudly that "fasting is nature's healer" and that "all animals fast when sick."

First of all, fasting is not nature's healer, the body and it's life force are. And it is the body itself that makes it abundantly and undeniably clear that it desires food on a daily basis. It is an absolute myth that a sick animal will deliberately deny itself nourishment. Most sick animals struggle to continue finding enough food; in fact often the cause of their demise is their inability to continue to obtain the nourishment necessary to survive in the wild. There are very specific instances and situations in which the body demands that we cease eating, and they are each signaled by a very clear, completely unmistakable message from the body, telling us loudly and clearly to STOP EATING. When fasting is appropriate, it comes effortlessly and naturally, not through forced discipline and egotistical mind games.

This point cannot be over emphasized: the only appropriate time to fast is when eating feels like a forced, unnatural, repulsive action. It is at that time, and only at that time, that a fast is in order. There is so much talk about trusting the healing power of the body and its innate wisdom, and yet we are expected to believe that it is healthy and natural to completely override the signal to eat. It should be clear that this something does not add up in this equation. And anyone fasting is immediately reminded of this error within a day or two of initiating a fast, through the unmistakable warning sign of weakness and reduced capacity.

How could anything that results in severe, almost paralytic weakness be healthful? It's so counter-intuitive as to almost be laughable, if it weren't so tragic. Yet hundreds of patients around the world lie in fasting centers throughout the world believing that they can starve themselves into health. Sadly, most of them will only succeed in weakening their already depleted systems, and catapulting themselves into a nearly inescapable cycle of disordered eating, resulting in long-term damage and psychological turmoil.

So what of the hundreds of anecdotal tales of miraculous healing and reversal of disease? There is a simple explanation for the temporary positive results obtained on a fast. First and foremost, a fasting individual has completely eliminated all of the toxic foods and drugs that they were consuming on a daily basis. And of course it makes perfect sense that the elimination of poisonous substances results in the elimination of any symptoms caused by those poisons. Tragically, this is conflated in a bizarre fashion, and somehow the actual fast itself is given the credit for the healing, rather than the obvious reason that the cessation of poisons will always result in improvement.

The second reason that people often experience positive and profoundly altered emotional states of being is that they have temporarily eliminated the source of so much confusion and fear: their food. By starving themselves and denying themselves food, a person can pretend that they have no issues with food, temporarily hiding from the fact that they may have severe issues with maintaining and sustaining a healthful, balanced diet. Naturally, they feel a great sense of freedom and joy, believing that they have solved all of their problems and that they have found the answer to true health. Of course, if one fasts forever, one dies, so the choice eventually is to return to the exact same problems as before (or usually worsened) or to succumb to physical death through starvation.

The third reason that fasting seems to result in positive change is because almost every case of a disordered and sick body manifests in some way through a disrupted metabolism. Eating makes it abundantly clear just how sick the body actually is, because our organs and nutrient delivery systems are being made to do their jobs, and so it's very clear that they are in a poor state. When a sick person eats, they experience the body's difficulty with digestion, with metabolism, with elimination, and with energy transfer. When they suddenly cease the consumption of nutrition, they are in a position to pretend that "everything is all right." It's no different than a fancy car sitting broken in a driveway: everything looks great until you try to start it up. And no matter how long we leave it sitting there, it still won't start. It is no different for the faster: everything feels great when they aren't actually using their system in ways it was made for. But as soon as the fasting retreat is over and you return home and begin eating again, the same symptoms reappear, the car "still won't start." But it sure felt great to pretend it didn't need to start in the first place. Lying in a bed in a state of incapacitating weakness is no way to gauge improvements in health. Being up and about, active, alert, and striving to reach new goals is how health and wellness should be measured.

Of course, when the body is made to endure forced starvation, the rebound effect is profound. People who have eaten balanced diets for years may suddenly find themselves bingeing on hamburgers, fried chicken, and ice cream after a "healthful fast." There have been hundreds of cases in which individuals broke their fasts on meats, cakes, pies, tacos, pizza, or worse, simply because the mental and emotional strain was too great. Even if an individual succeeds in following "fasting protocol" and breaking their fast with light foods such as fruits or broth, often within a few days the body's demands for satiety result in bingeing on unhealthful, toxic foods. And usually, the ramifications last years, if not decades. The ripple effects of starvation profoundly influence the psyche on a deep level. The human body was not made to deny itself food, and the difficulty with which one undertakes a fast is the proof of this. Only through a forced, artificial, almost prison-like setting, is it even possible for most to succeed. And those who do succeed often pride themselves on their "discipline." But health doesn't come through discipline, it comes through a unity of mind, body, and nature, learning to listen to our appetite in ways that serve us. Denying that we have appetite will lead to denial of health, nutriment, and nurture.

Fasting is no different than any other "quick-fix" method of attaining health, including pill-popping or surgical intervention. Real health is accumulated through persistent application of specific health-supporting principles, and does not happen suddenly or dramatically. Learning to appreciate the slow and steady pace of a truly healthful rejuvenation process will allow one to enjoy health for a lifetime, rather than the pseudo health that one experiences during forced starvation. In our quick-fix society, it can be quite a challenge to accept that there is no place for drama or speed in a frugivore lifestyle and in the attainment of health. Fasting is an attempt to override nature by applying human judgment to the process of healing, attempting to force and control the pace and manner of the healing process.

Fasting is truly a dangerous game.

so im curious as to why some hygiene doctors prescribe different diets for individuals breaking fast like in Joel Fuhrmans book fasting and eating for health he talks about prescribing a diet low in starch and raw fruits and high in stewed veggies due to the clients inability to digest the fruits and starches(just one example of a prescribed diet to a patient suffering from colitis) now i under stand that some doctors do urine sampling right after consuming one type of whole food to see if the body is metabolizing it and that's how doctors like mr. Fuhrman create a temporary low fat vegan specific diet for the clientele ( i can't say for certain but i think all hygiene doctors are all about the low fat vegan based diets). another example is about a patient Dr. Scott had after this patient fast the only things his body could digest were steamed zucchini and potatoes. why is it that these individuals could not consume any fruit what so ever? or where there fruit options that where just over looked? Dr. D stats in 80/10/10 that you are what you digest. and i understand that some clients have trouble digesting certain things but i find it hard to believe that fruits would irritate your system and could contribute to a recurrence of an illness
