Following the ban of GM maize in Mexico, this ancient and agriculturally savvy culture has won a major battle against biotech monopolies around the globe.

The Second District Court ruled in favor of three Mayan communities from the Hopelchén township who dared to take on the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock , Rural Development, Fisheries and Food ( Sagarpa) and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources ( SEMARNAT).

This means that Saragapa now must make a concerted effort to be sure that no GM soybeans are planted throughout Pachen and Cancabchen communities in Hopelchén. Just two years ago, the same agency allowed Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready GMO soybeans to be planted in the region – infecting more than 253,000 hectares with suicide seeds that cause human infertility and poison the environment.

Seven states were under Monsanto’s reign – free then to plant their GM seeds wherever they liked within those borders, including the municipalities of: Campeche, Hopelchén , Tenabo , Calkiní , Escárcega, Carmen and Palisade.

In just a few of these places, the authorities were angry that the government had given Monsanto authorization, and they decided to fight the ruling. Campeche beekeepers were especially upset since this would affect bee-keeping negatively in the region. They called Monsanto’s influence, ‘pollution of production,’ resulting in loss of income and closing of markets for many bee keepers with international contracts.

After two years of litigation, and arguing that the planting of GM soybeans was in direct opposition of traditional beekeeping practices, AND that it was in violation of their right to a healthy environment – pointing out that increased use of herbicides and deforestation were both outcomes of GM planting – the Mayans won their case. These small indigenous communities have taken on the multi-billion-dollar biotech and Big Ag companies and won. They are an example to us all.

Yes, it takes a lot of determination and dedication to be raw vegan in a Northern climate, but it is harmful to your body no matter how hard you try to eat more fruit, run around in the snow, etc. Sunlight and fresh air are as important as any other needs of the body.

This is the perfect opportunity the truly nourish your body, mind and soul. So it will be difficult being the only one not sitting down to meals with them. I would avoid this trip if I could, but I HAVE to go or I'll fail my degree. :/
Any information would be fantastic, thank you!

Oooo, also, it's recommended that we have numerous vaccinations/jabs before going there; what do you guys think about this? The last vaccination (or whatever you'd call it) was the Cervical cancer jab (we had it in college in the U.K) about four years ago.
As I will be doing fieldwork, things such as tetanus are an issue.

I'm sure many of you understand. ;-P

Unfortunately, we didn't buy our tickets soon enough, so now a weeklong trip to the beach would run us over $800 each + cost of stay. Paying that price would not be very conducive to our relaxation, jaja.

Anyway, short story very long, we're now considering a Mexican vacation. My cousin's friend has a home in San Felipe (in Baja) in which we could stay, but I was curious if anybody else here has been to San Felipe or near there and could report on the fruit front. Because whenever I go to Tijuana, the fruit is fantastic, and that's only 20-30 miles from me. I can only imagine what it's like 200 miles deeper south on a coastal town!

SO! If anybody can help me out or offer me alternative places, that would be HAWESOME!!! We're also considering Ensenada but that wouldn't come with a free home. X-P Jajajaja!

 Thanks a lot, fellow fruities!!!

Today I have seen one of the most charming movies of my time: Off the Map.Has anyone else seen it? It is idyllic, and poetic and sad, and beautiful. Brought forward one of the deepest yearnings I had all through my life...living off the map.The family had 4 years worth of food in preserves...I guess New Mexico is too dry for fruit trees. But perhaps with some smart water management it could be one of the best off the map places. .... just dreaming....and sharing. G'night you all.
offthemappic.jpg
