Hey all!,

I'm new here! I wasn't exactly sure where to start so I figured I'd post here. Psyched I joined up and consider myself a student and teacher of life. My goal is to gain as much knowledge from you all and share mine in return. I first found out about "30 Bananas A Day" from a friend who suggested I check out Durianrider's YouTube channel. I was about a week into my bicycle tour riding racked from New York to California which took me 75 days(you can watch the video here). I was on the path to mastery and needed inspiration which Durian provided. Not only has he changed my perspective on eating but my life. After my trip in 2014 I've been doing the "Raw Till 4" lifestyle and my cycling and overall life has improved.

While I still have many things to work on, I'd like to gain more of a knowledge base around food and what it does for my body and how it can improve my cycling. I have a website which you can check out at Manual Pedal and YouTube channel. I've been biking all my life. My dad said one I picked up my bike I never put it down and he's right, I never will put it down until it's my time. I started in BMX which then led me to track and road cycling. I now do road cycling exclusively and bike touring and bikepacking when time permits.

I can often go off in tangents so to leave on a lite note... I'm really psyched to be apart of this community and looking forward to learning and sharing.

Best Regards,

Dwayne _/\_

How about a yummy fruit popsicle?

Recently I had to undergo a procedure that required me to fast for a day. They allow you to have broth and popsicles. Yum!

So off to the store I went in search of a whole fruit popsicle. Sounds easy, right? Nope! The majority of them have many added ingredients that I didn't want.

I decided to whip some up for myself. So easy and simple. This is one of those recipes that you can't believe you haven't made sooner!

Great for Kids!

This is also a great recipe to make with kids! Have them get involved and pick their favorite fruits. You can use coconut water, fruit juice, coconut milk yogurt or canned coconut milk if you are going for a creamy popsicle. You can throw some veggies or greens in there as well for added nutrition.

Flavor Combinations

Shown above are a couple of my favorite combinations. Pineapple/coconut & Strawberry/Nectarine.

Give them a try. Super sweet and refreshing!

Blend fruit combinations, then pour and freeze in popsicle molds.

Pineapple/Coconut - Fresh pineapple with coconut water.

Strawberry/Nectarine- Fresh strawberries and nectarines make a great combo for a popsicle or smoothie.

Tip: When ready to take popsicles out of molds, run warm water over mold first before releasing.

Blessings,

And even if that does not work, the public schools may still get more plant based lunches, which is a step in the right direction.

What do you think of the dietary recommendations moving more towards a plant-based diet?

Purpose:

Data from epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that dietary protein intake may play a role in inhibiting prostate and breast cancer by modulating the IGF/AKT/mTOR pathway. In this study we investigated the effects of diets with different protein content or quality on prostate and breast cancer.

Experimental Design:

To test our hypothesis we assessed the inhibitory effect of protein diet restriction on prostate and breast cancer growth, serum PSA and IGF-1 concentrations, mTOR activity and epigenetic markers, by using human xenograft cancer models.

Results:

Our results showed a 70% inhibition of tumor growth in the castrate-resistant LuCaP23.1 prostate cancer model and a 56% inhibition in the WHIM16 breast cancer model fed with a 7% protein diet when compared to an isocaloric 21% protein diet. Inhibition of tumor growth correlated, in the LuCaP23.1 model, with decreased serum PSA and IGF-1 levels, down-regulation of mTORC1 activity, decreased cell proliferation as indicated by Ki67 staining, and reduction in epigenetic markers of prostate cancer progression, including the histone methyltransferase EZH2 and the associated histone mark H3K27me3. In addition, we observed that modifications of dietary protein quality, independently of protein quantity, decreased tumor growth. A diet containing 20% plant protein inhibited tumor weight by 37% as compared to a 20% animal dairy protein diet.

Conclusions:

Our findings suggest that a reduction in dietary protein intake is highly effective in inhibiting tumor growth in human xenograft prostate and breast cancer models, possibly through the inhibition of the IGF/AKT/mTOR pathway and epigenetic modifications.

The results from our studies may have a rapid translation into the clinic. We envision that patients with recurrent PCa and BC could be offered diet modifications involving protein dietary content at different stages of their disease with appropriate monitoring. The absence of a differential effect in the AS and CR LuCaP23.1 models suggest that the androgen status does not affect the response of PCa to protein restriction. Furthermore, intratumor androgen receptor expression was not inhibited in the 7% protein diet group (data not shown). An ongoing clinical study in patients with newly diagnosed PCa will provide important information on the biological changes following this dietary intervention before prostatectomy.

In summary, a high-protein diet promoted the growth of human LuCaP23.1 and WHIM16 tumors in mice, and a reduction in protein intake resulted in a significant inhibition of tumor growth even when the diet was started after the formation of measurable tumors, possibly through inhibition of the IGF/Akt/mTOR pathway and epigenetic modifications. Moreover, our findings indicate that plant proteins partially inhibit prostate cancer growth independently of caloric or proteic intake, suggesting that protein quality plays a key role in the progression of prostate and breast cancer. Clinical studies in patients with prostate and breast cancer are warranted to confirm the impact of dietary modifications in protein content and quality on tumor progression.

Oncotarget. 2013 Dec;4(12):2451-61. I talk a bit about what it includes in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0XMSDCpaPM

Jameth Sheridan, GMO Free Arizona, Vegan (and raw) chef demos (I'll be there!), and many more awesome speakers and naturopathic doctors will be making this event available to the public.

There is no dogma surrounding this event; it's about sharing what a plant-based diet is to a broader spectrum of the population of society so that they may educate themselves and start on their path. If you think about it, we can be very off-putting by claiming one has to go all or nothing, therefore it's about encouraging transition and conscious-living through diet and lifestyle.

I've attached a flier. If you're around - seriously, you should go!
Also - Jared is looking for volunteers (go for freeeee!), free vendor booths, and sponsors - so hit him up at plantbasednation@gmail.com

<3 <3 <3 Namaste

PBN Scottsdale Flyer - 5-11-13 Full Size.jpg

I heard the planting from a seed means that it is not very likely it will actually grow to be a medjool palm as it could be any variety of palm which it may have been pollinated by. What if all the palms in the area are from other delicious varieties. Is it worth the risk of planting a germinated seed and play the waiting game..which sounds kind of exciting in a way..

I just don't know what to do.

Here is a great article on the old myth of incomplete fruit/vegetable proteins. I'm amazed at how many people want to start conversations with me about my incomplete proteins when they see me eating lots of fruit all day every day.

I will be referring them to the following article from now on, and may even print a copy and keep it in my locker at work :)

[Article removed because Author doesn't want free advertising]

Excerpt 1:

Experts confirm that plant proteins are complete

Besides the American Dietetic Association, other medical and nutrition professionals who have actually looked at the science have come to the same conclusion that there is no need to carefully combine proteins. For example:

Dennis Gordon, M.Ed, R.D.:

[C]omplementing proteins is not necessary with vegetable proteins. The myth that vegetable source proteins need to be complemented is similar to the myths that persist about sugar making one's blood glucose go up faster than starch does. These myths have great staying power despite their being no evidence to support them and plenty to refute them.8

Jeff Novick, M.S., R.D.:

Recently, I was teaching a nutrition class and describing the adequacy of plant-based diets to meet human nutritional needs. A woman raised her hand and stated, "I've read that because plant foods don't contain all the essential amino acids that humans need, to be healthy we must either eat animal protein or combine certain plant foods with others in order to ensure that we get complete proteins."

I was a little surprised to hear this, since this is one of the oldest myths related to vegetarianism and was disproved long ago. When I pointed this out, the woman identified herself as a medical resident and stated that her current textbook in human physiology states this and that in her classes, her professors have emphasized this point.

I was shocked. If myths like this not only abound in the general population, but also in the medical community, how can anyone ever learn how to eat healthfully? It is important to correct this misinformation because many people are afraid to follow healthful, plant-based, and/or total vegetarian (vegan) diets because they worry about "incomplete proteins" from plant sources. ...if you calculate the amount of each essential amino acid provided by unprocessed plant foods ... you will find that any single one, or combination, of these whole natural plant foods provides all of the essential amino acids. ...

Modern researchers know that it is virtually impossible to design a calorie-sufficient diet based on unprocessed whole natural plant foods that is deficient in any of the amino acids. (The only possible exception could be a diet based solely on fruit.)9

John A. McDougall, M.D.:

Many people believe than animal foods contain protein that is superior in quality to the protein found in plants. This is a misconception dating back to 1914, when Osborn and Mendel studied the protein requirements of laboratory rats.[11]... Based on these early rat experiments the amino acid pattern found in animal products was declared to be the standard by which to compare the amino acid pattern of vegetable foods. According to this concept, wheat and rice were declared deficient in lysine, and corn was deficient in tryptophan. It has since been shown that the initial premise that animal products supplied the most ideal protein pattern for humans, as it did for rats, was incorrect.... From the chart, it is clear that even single vegetable foods contain more than enough of all amino acids essential for humans.... Furthermore, many investigators have found no improvement by mixing plant foods or supplementing them with amino acid mixtures to make the combined amino acid pattern look more like that of flesh, milk, or eggs.[35-44] ... People have actually lived for long periods of time in excellent health by satisfying their entire nutritional needs with potatoes and water alone.[33] ... Nature has designed vegetable foods to be complete. If people living before the age of modern dietetics had had to worry about achieving the correct protein combinations in their diets, our species would not have survived for these millions of years.10

Andrew Weil, M.D.:

You may have heard that vegetable sources of protein are "incomplete" and become "complete" only when correctly combined. Research has discredited that notion so you don't have to worry that you won't get enough usable protein if you don't put together some magical combination of foods at each meal.10.5

Charles Attwood, M.D.:

Beans, however, are rich sources of _all_ essential amino acids. The old ideas about the necessity of carefully combining vegetables at every meal to ensure the supply of essential amino acids has been totally refuted. [emphasis added]11

[Article removed because Author doesn't want free advertising]
