Hi  guys! Just want to share my enthusiasm for an awesome experience I had last Saturday, at the Houston Running Festival running 100 miles thanks to God and a raw vegan diet! ANYONE CAN DO IT, IT'S 99% MENTAL!

DON'T CONGRATULATE ME! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!! I didn't do anything special! Running 100 miles is normal! ANYONE CAN DO IT! USE ME TO GET MOTIVIATED TO GO SIGN YOURSELF UP FOR A RACE! PUSH YOURSELF OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE! CREATE A NEW "NORMAL" FOR YOURSELF! STOP SETTING LIMITATIONS FOR YOURSELF! BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART, THAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING ANYTHING ANOTHER PERSON CAN DO!!!

There was a man out there with me on the course who only had one leg and was in a wheelchair!!! He was rolling around the course with me 12 hours into the race, pushing himself to get as far as he could go, on a cold, windy night, with powerful rain beating down on his wheelchair! IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL! He didn't go all 100 miles, but he made it a long way, and I'm grateful that I was able to share the experience of running all night with that man!!!

I've been on these forums for 2 years, I have 1120 posts so far. Been reading thousands of these threads. Raw Vegan diet made it relatively easy to run 100 miles. It took me 35 Hours 57 Minutes, but I feel really good about that time. It was raining hard, cold and windy almost the entire time (5 of us finished the 100 mile distance out of 25 people attempting it), and the course was flooded. So there were some hours of hiding from the rain, resting the quads etc.

Anyhow it was a fantastic experience. I mostly do cycling, so I basically did 2 months of running training, and like 80% of my training was just eating a raw vegan diet.

To put things in perspective, 2 years ago, when I was beginning to learn about High Carb, Low Fat Raw, I attempted the Houston Marathon, and it took me 7 hours and 20 minutes, and I got injured severely and extremely tired. By contrast on Saturday I finished the first 50 miles in under 10 hours giving 75% effort, I was not tired at all, and it was more of a question of muscle fatigue, rather than my body ever getting tired (leg strength issues but no shortness of breath or tired sensation). So for me, this was a huge accomplishment.

Many of the other runners (including the guy who got 2nd place), were throwing up or dry heaving, and experiencing chest, stomach or side pain, from their struggles to keep up with nutrition. Many of them were eating cooked food, like rice and sandwiches, and hotdogs, and pizza! A large % of runners either did not finish or dropped down to a shorter distance due to stomach sickness, lack of energy, or fatigue from battling the storm.  My stomach felt great the entire time! Just ate the same food I eat every other day!

On race day I ate the following:

-3 liters of fresh squeezed orange juice from Whole Foods

-3 pounds of medjool dates (spread out throughout the day)

-10 oranges

-2 gallons of water (estimate, I lost track and just drank when I was thirsty)

-1 liter of banana smoothie

For fuel, to keep it simple, I basically focused on only fluids (water, orange juice, a small amount of banana smoothie in the morning). Then as the day progressed and I got hungry, I slowly incorporated watery fruit (oranges). Finally as my body craved solid food, I had the dates, only eating a few at a time.

This lifestyle works. I have experienced a significant energy boost, a significant increase in focus, and my athletic performance has reached a level much higher than I have ever experienced in my life, even though I train a far less time and take it less seriously than when I was young and playing competitive sports (basketball, martial arts, swimming), plus back then my body hadn't been riddled with serious injuries.

So yeah fruit for the win. I have more energy than I know what to do with, and it feels very good to be able to ride my bike or run for days at a time, without getting tired, and to be 10X more motivated and productive at work.

THIS IS HOW LIFE SHOULD BE!!!!

Watch these videos to get motivated!!! Anyone can do it, it's 95% mental!!! Let's stop trying to use other people to make excuses for things we don't think we can do, and focus on the steps we need to take to achieve what other people are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a great day! YOLO!!!!

  • How do you build stamina as a runner..i can't even run a lap without feeling like my lungs are going to burst i want to run half marathon by next year (if not a whole marathon) plus i want to out do my runner other :)

    • Running is easy. You are having a hard time running, not because running is hard, but because you are doing it wrong. It's 95% mental.

-Just follow all the instructions on this website: http://www.30bananasaday.com/profiles/blogs/30bad-banana-wagon-tour

      - Find a training plan online: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Ultramarathon_Training_Plans

-Sign up for a race so you have some "skin in the game". Once you have money on the line, you will be COMMITTED to training. Signing up is like 1/2 the battle. Sometimes if you wait until you "are ready", it will never happen for you: http://www.chicagomarathon.com

-Watch instructional videos online. Then record yourself running. Learn to know your body. Once your running form is improved, running will become a very healing and pleasurable experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikUkGntOOUE

-Watch training lectures from top runners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vce-pVYIjx8

      -Track your progress: www.Strava.com

-Surround yourself with other people who make running long distances seem normal and who are faster than you. MAKE NEW FRIENDS.

      -Watch motivational videos everyday

But the main thing is YOUR MIND. Just like anything else in life, it's important to DO IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS.

It's like two men, getting married, one man marries his wife because she is his best friend, he loves her and wants to build a deep and lasting friendship with her and share the rest of his life with her.

A second man also gets married, but he gets married because he wants a Visa to move to a new country, or because he wants to marry into a rich family, IT'S NOT THE SAME THING.

If you run because you want to brag about finishing a marathon, you'll be too preoccupied with what other people think, to learn to enjoy the simple act of running. If you run to "get skinny", you'll be too easily discouraged to learn to enjoy breaking through the temporary discomfort of a challenging run, to have a feeling of vibrancy, health, and strength in your body.

I run because it's part of my plan to achieve long term health. I run because it's part of my lifestyle. I run because I want to enjoy a high quality of life on earth, and live for many many years on this planet, as long as possible. I run because it clears my mind, because if I can enjoy running on the roads and on the trails, I can learn to enjoy anything, and I can learn to enjoy life, in the moment, never bored, fully alive and awake.

I run because it makes me more confident, more focused, and I enjoy the challenge. I run because it brings me closer to God, and I am in awe of the beautiful scenery that surrounds me out in the trails, the divine beauty and complexity of the world around us. I run because I can feel my deceased relatives spirits with me, when I'm out on a long run, or a long ride. Running, cycling, showing up at work everyday...these are not activities to me....THEY ARE A STATE OF MIND.

We can learn to love anything if we put our heart and mind to it, running is no exception. What if we learned to enjoy and appreciate, even the tedious parts of life? What if rather than trying to avoid pain or discomfort, we were alive in the moment, and looked at everything we did as a unique creation? What if every moment we lived, were like a completely unique piece of art?

WHAT IF EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU, AND ALL YOU NEEDED TO DO WAS TO REACH OUT AND GRAB IT?

WHAT IF THAT MOMENT WAS RIGHT NOW?

WHY ARE WE ALL SITTING AROUND WAITING FOR SOMEONE OR SOMETHING TO COME ALONG TO MOTIVATE US, AND GET US TO LIVE LIFE PASSIONATELY? MAYBE ITS TIME WE LEARNED HOW TO MOTIVATE OURSELVES!!!

  • Awesome!

  • Wow, so amazing. I'd love to run a ultra marathon but have a bad knee. Good for you! did your fellow runners interview you?

    • I HAVE A BAD KNEE TOO LOL!!!

I suffered two severe tears in my left meniscus 9 years ago, that required them to shave out something like 40% of the cushion in my knee so that my knee is BONE ON BONE!!! THEY TOLD ME I'D BE ON PAIN KILLERS THE REST OF MY LIFE! So glad I didn't listen to them, in so much less pain now!

Rather than let that stop me from running, I did a lot of research and and radically changed my running style from Gazelle to Glider to minimize impact.

I then created a strength building routine based on strengthening the major muscle groups in the legs, so my muscles can make up for the lack of cushion.

Then I got into Yin Yoga daily practice:

Will I be able to consistently compete in ultra marathons? I don't know...but I know that I felt awesome running all day and all night last Saturday!!!!

If I ever can't walk, I'll just do like these guys!

but I'm gonna do a regular marathon for sure once I'm ready!
