Hayfever

Starting yesterday, I have been suffering from hayfever again. I have had this all my life, I have the feeling it is getting worse every year. I am HCRV for almost a full year now, been on banana island for the past weeks, but I can hardly breathe. Swallowing hurts, and I am sneezing constantly. My eyes are very watery and stingy, any my throat is so itchy, it is almost unbearable!

I am eating more greens than usually, drink plenty of water and make sure to get enough sleep + exercise. Is there anything else I can do? I read somewhere that oranges will help too?

  • +1 French Apple!

  • Oh, that is good to know, thanks!

  • Nerada,

What kind of greens are you eating?

It is best to focus on lettuce greens and skip things like kale and spinach in part because of their high oxalate content and or other irritating compounds that can cause asthma like symptoms and or excessive mucus production.

Yes to the Oranges!  They are nature's pharmacy in a peel! :-D

Oranges are high in natural antihistamines and natural pain relievers and or natural anti inflammatory.   Between eating at least one mono meal of oranges a day, and or 1/2-2 heads of lettuce a day, you might find your symptoms improved.  (Mine did.)

Also, it may be time for you to get off banana island.  We usually only recommend banana island for anywhere from 3-10 days and only for people with extreme issues like colitis, IBS, Crohn's disease, etc.  Otherwise, we recommend eat simple meals, but a rainbow of fruits, lettuce greens, and or nuts over a period of time to ensure we are getting all of our required nutrients.

Good luck and hope things improve soon.

    Peace, PK

    • PK, great response, as usual! :)

I have been eating a fair amount of spinach lately, along with lettuce. I will just stick to the lettuce from now on. I will stick to just one meal of bananas then (have so many left!) and will start eating a big mono meal of oranges first thing in the morning :)

Without the spinach though, my iron intake (according to cronometer) is only at 50%. What other greens/fruits do you recommend that are high in iron?

      Thanks so much!! :)

      • @Nerada,

Thank you for your kind words too.

Iron intake is pretty easy to get if one is able to follow our guidelines such as eating 1/2-2 heads of lettuce a day, 2-3 oz of raw nuts, and then the rest of calories in fruit.

Females of childbearing age at most need about 18 mg of iron a day at most.  (iron)

If you can eat them, 2 oz of raw nuts like cashews can give you 4 mg of iron, a head of romaine lettuce about 6 mg, one large cantaloupe about 1.7 and that is about 11-12 mg of iron.  If we fill in the gaps with enough calories from fruit, and with fruit averaging about .5 mg of iron a serving, that usually more than covers our needs.

As someone else mentioned, if we avoid spinach and or other high oxalate foods which cause iron blocking, then in theory, our iron needs may be much smaller.  For males who neither menstruate or have children, their needs are only at about 8 mg.

What others suggested here are good ideas too.

        Peace, PK

      • 2 kg Orange peeled , 15 dates and 600 gram lettuce

gives 136 % Iron for females and 305% for males.

        • 600g of lettuce?? Wow that is a huge amount. I will try :)

          • According to my calculation, that is about 1 head of romaine lettuce.  I eat about 1/2-1 head of romaine and or other lettuce everyday and usually start dinner with lettuce and or a salad.  You get used to it.  Sometimes I eat it as a salad, and sometimes, I just dig into the whole head minus any prepping.  My source comes clean though. Of course some people do need to wash grit and debris off.

            Peace, PK

          • I put it in the Blender with 3 bananas. Otherwise it wil take me whole day ha ha.

Try the 600 gram letucce, it's the amount you should take daily on this diet.

Maybe it's the key to your problems.
