Help with Buying a Bike

I know this isn't about food, but I am looking to purchase a bike soon. And I have some idea in mind what I am looking for. I saw some of your cycling videos Durianrider and took some notes. I have a few questions though, sorry if I sound like an idiot, I am new to the whole bike thing.

I am looking maybe to get into racing in the near future. I think a road bike would fit me, since I live and would ride in the city. I would also like to hook up my trailer when I go shopping.

These questions are pertaining Durianrider's cycling videos.

You said to purchase alloy frames, steerer, NO carbon. And of the 4 manufacturers you recommend either Specialize, Trek, Cannondale and Giant because they are great quality and feature lifetime warranty.

1. There are so many different types of road bikes, but when searching online I can't seem to find price, and the specification you asked to look for. I am looking at Trek 1.1 which is around my budget $729 http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/sport/2_and_1_series/models

However it is features aluminum frame, so is this okay, as you mentioned to get Alloy? I can't seem to find frames that are alloy or to the specs that you mentioned in one of your videos. I am confused????

2. And since I am a newbie I have no idea what the bike parts and terms mean, like for example, when I look at the specs of the 1.1 bike, http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/sport/2_and_1_series/1_1_h2_compact/#/us/en/model/details?url=us/en/bikes/road/sport/2_and_1_series/1_1_h2_compact

I am confused about the terms when they say for example;

Frame fit, H2 or

Rear derailleur

Is there anywhere I can go to find out what all the terms mean?

3. What do you mean by "flat bar"?

4. There are different types of road bikes, for basic road and for racing, nothing too expensive (under $900 Canadian) what type of road bikes and models would I look at? A lot of bikes are carbon or aluminum frames. I don't see much alloy as you mentioned I should look into.

In fact I have so many questions probably never ending, so I will leave it at that.

Basically I am a really confused beginner. I also would love to get a bright blue bike (my favourite colour). I know colour doesn't matter, but it does to me. I would really appreciate any help for this beginner and amateur... Anything would help. Thank you.

  • Aluminium='Alloy' AFAIK.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. Looking for a bike, when I haven't riden for 15 years.

Difference being I'll be spending about 70% of my time on jungle tracks, as opposed to road.

I can't help you with those particular models, though. Everything I've been looking at is above $2000.

The rear derailleur is the thing that shoves the chain from one gear cog to another.

Flat Bar refers to the handlebars. Flat vs the Curved Road-Racing style.
