How do I go back to being fruitarian? (I'm an idiot)

I was fruitarian for about one year, but over the past few days I have switched back to a diet of cooked foods for a few reasons.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, exactly. I may have consumed too little sodium or something along those lines, I found out many days I would only be having 30 mg.

It was amazing for the majority of that time, but the last 2-3 months of it was when I began to feel awful. My dark circles were prominent, I was bloated and my digestion was terrible, my eyes were turning a bit yellow, I felt very fatigued and kept gaining weight despite exercising often and eating decently.

Slightly after I started experiencing these symptoms, I then decided to significantly increase the amount of physical activity I was engaging in. I went from a routine of either cycling 20 miles or walking between 5-15 miles per day to then running that same amount or cycling for about 3-8 hours.

And (!) I also unfortunately found out I was doing the entire thing on a caloric deficit, so that was likely the reason why I lost so much hair. (Ok so this definitely made everything a lot worse, I know I did this one thing wrong. It exaggerated all the symptoms I had.)

Anyways, I gained about 20 lbs in a month, I felt like a water balloon about to burst. I still do a little bit. It was very noticeable because I'm so short.

It was just a weird situation. I wish I could go back to the first half of it when I was very energetic and happy and the leanest I've ever been.

I've started a diet of eating mainly cooked starches, still really low in fat. So far my face is a lot less bloated, my dark circles are going away, I am more calm. I'm not eating additional salt, I have no idea what's going on but I'd love to go back to raw veganism.

What advice would you give me to be successful in my next attempt? Thanks. I was thinking about going back to it in another week or two.

  • I can't make a guess why you had those problems (that's probably why no one has responded).  But some advice I can give is:

If just going back to cooked, and maintaining the same ratio (HCLF), you gotta ask why your problems are going away.it's either

    1.  With starches, you are probably getting more calories. (you don't mention how many calories you were eating, so I'm guessing you didn't count)

    2.  or cooked food brought you out of deep detox.

You should not do all or nothing.  Have fruit the 1st half of the day; Starch/beans the 2nd half.  And why not have some avocado just to be on the safe side.

Increase vegetables.  I've found it helps get rid of the water balloon problem.
