How To Prevent Monkey Attack?

Every time we go to areas with monkeys we have troubles with them.

One time they wanted to get in our tent in Koh Jum. I tried to scare them with a rock, however they started charging after me with exposed teeth.

Another time we were in Koh Phi Phi hiking. When descending a group of maybe 5 or 6 monkeys approached us, specifically my girlfriend. I started to throw big rocks at them, but they got even more agressive. Dogs would be long gone by now. Unfortunatelly I hit my grilfriend straight in the head with a big rock and she started bleeding. After I kept screaming and 2 thai guys came to help us with airsoft guns. Only then they backed up. We had to take my gf to hospital where she got 6 stitches on the head.

So therefore I am asking here if anyone knows of some proven way to scare the monkeys away.

I know most advice out there says that they want your food. Does it mean that you should not hike with a backpack on? What about the water for the day?

Thanks for advice.

  • Another time, in Kathmandu, I learned to LET GO if they grab food from you...if you hold on, their mouth (and teeth) will quickly find the food through your hand. Survived that by a tenth of a second....
Those monkeys were BIG. (Monkey Temple, don't know if it fell in the big quake). Those monkeys were worshipped...and not likely to be reprimanded.
    • thanks for your advice. We some actually bought some firecrackers before going to Khao Sok national park, but we didnt have any bad monkey encounters. We just saw them on the other side of the river, luckily they didnt cross.

  • Not that this is useful information when hiking, nor when there are multiple monkeys:
Monkeys are often caught by putting a box with an orange (or same size other fruit) in it, with an opening only the size big enough for monkey to reach in...
They grab the fruit, and will not let go, even thugh they cannot withdraw hand with fruit in it. This was commonly known in the 1970's, have not heard about it lately.
Then the monkey is captured...for whatever purposes.
But when hiking...what then? What can you do with them?

Yes, I have had several monkey encounters in several countries. They are thugs, vandals and hoods. Bullies. Why are bullies "bullies"? That is likely a base reason for the monkeys behaviours. I have been in outdoor restaurants where the swinging monkeys witll fling their feces at you while tou are eating. That is pure "being a bully"...just because they can, and they have learned they canot be caught...
  • They approached you and did what? It doesn't sound like they were agro until you started throwing shit at them.

Why do you need to scare them away? Give them some bananas.

    • you obviously havent encountered monkeys yet. They will take whatever they want from you.
