Recently published meta-analysis showed that in isocaloric diets (when coloric intake remains the same, and does not exeed energy expenditure), consumption of fructose does not cause weight gain in comparison to fructose free diet (comsume other types of carbs, e.g. starch, which is a long chaing of glucose molecules).

Fructose does not seem to cause weight gain when it is substituted for other carbohydrates in diets providing similar calories. Free fructose at high doses that provided excess calories modestly increased body weight, an effect that may be due to the extra calories rather than the fructose.

However, there is some limitation to this study, that most studies where short term and low participant number.

P.S. Need to point out that in manalyzed studies fructose were not from fruit, used free fructose, but not HFCS.

  • I'm a little confused. Wasn't it already known that an isocaloric diet (any kind of diet) wouldn't lead to weight gain? That's how I see it. Thanks.

    • It was, but you know that thanks to dr. Lustig and some other 'experts' recent claims that fructose is one of the major causes of obesity epidemic etc., this meta-analysis looked is there  evidence in the literature to prove that fructose causes weight-gain or more likely to cause weight gain that other carbs, like glucose. And what they found that fructose does not cause weight gain, provided subjects do not consume excess calories,  which accodording to the conclusion of this study is the major cause of obesity/weightgain.
