Low Fat Raw and Reproduction

I'm kind of new to this diet, but have a few concerns that I am hoping some of the women on this site might be able to answer! Everything about low fat raw vegan makes so much sense to me and I am hoping that it will help heal me to heal myself from a lot of health issues I have been facing recently. The one thing that makes me a bit concerned is the chance of the low fat content of the diet resulting in my losing my period, a fact that has happened in the past when following low fat diets. As a 21 year old, do I need to worry about what this will do to my reproductive system? Is it true that women need not have a "period" to have children because ovulation can still occur?? I'm looking for some assurance, or warning (whichever is most truthful)...Thanks!

  • According to some studies, Indian women did not bleed:

And this dr. say bleeding is not natural: http://www.roh-vegan.de/artikel/urkunde.htm

I consulted a very knowledgeable dr. from my country and she told me that women on raw foods ovulate without bleeding.

    • Dear Ariel, I would be also very interested in the articles. Thanks a lot.
    • Hello Ariel, please could you also e-mail the articles for me at: julie.groenewald@gmail.com

      Thanx♥
      • Ariel, could you post the articles on this thread? I'd like to see them too! : )
    • That would be so helpful, Ariel. You can send the articles to nmerrill@students.colgate.edu whenever you get a chance.

How is your experience trying to get pregnant going? Have you had any children in the past? If so, are you having more or less trouble this time around?
  • I dunno Nina, for me, my period flow increases a lot when I eat no overt fats, and remains the same when I am eating low fat, under 15%. The only thing that changes is the PMS, cramps, zits etc. aren't there.
  • Absolutely! The more personal experiences I hear, the more confident I am that a lack of bleeding is not necessarily harmful (and that it is maybe one more signifier of true health). Thanks for all of your stories.
    • this is interesting!
only recently i heard that women who are eating prodominantly biogenic food (live food, but expecially sprouts etc) can lose their bleeding all together, and it is just becasue their body is working so well, to the extent that they are reabsorbing it all back into their body to be used....

this was posed to me as a very provocative and delicate subject, i have done no further research... but the idea is worth looking into... maybe we just don't have to bleed!!!

but one thing i know, is that we DON"T have to have pain!!!... and if this diet makes the pain go away and it can't really be doing anything bad hey!
  • I'm not sure about what the deal is regarding a woman's health if she is not bleeding monthly. But I just wanted to pipe in to say that I conceived my 2nd child without having had a bleed since becoming pregnant with my 1st child 3 years earlier.

It is fairly easy to observe and chart your own fertility signs...I observed my body return to ovulating about 2 years after my son was born (breastfeeding on demand suppressed ovulation during that time). I ovulated about 5 or 6 times without having a bleed before conceiving my daughter.
