my bananas smell like alcohol

but i peeled them and made a smoothie out of them anyway

are they safe to eat when fermented aka why they smelt like alcohol?

i had nothing else to eat this morning :(

they were almost all black, really slimy and smelt strongly of alcohol.

hope this isn't too bad for me... :(

  • Whenever they get that bad I just toss them. They are beyond the point of eating imo. If you freeze or put them in the fridge though when they just get perfectly ripe they last for awhile longer. All that being said, probably not going to cause anything to negative other than it not tasting very good, maybe upset stomach.

  • You will have ingested some alcohol, Just don't make a habit of it. - Would be hard since fermented bananas taste disgusting.
There is a small window of opportunity  ~3 days when the bananas are peak ripeness before they go mushy and alcoholic, when the bananas are soft to touch (have some give when you poke them) they are turning and should be eaten immediately before they change into vampires, suck your blood and fly away as bats.

  • ew, i can't believe you ate that lol

  • i hate when fruit does that. i just had an avocado that smelled like alchol. tastes so nasty. i wonder if we ferment and start turning into alchol when we die too.

  • am i going to get drunk?!

is that why i have been so out of it ?!

    • Haha they likely don't have enough alcohol in them to make you feel tipsy, but if you're super sensitive you may feel something. Do you feel super funky?

  • As you may know, the process of fermentation does result in the production of alcohol, which is a toxic substance. That being said, I don't think you'll suffer any major problems as a result of your smoothie. :)
Just let that be a lesson to you! Try and stay stocked up, so you don't have to get intoxicated for breakfast! :)
