MY MOUTH BUUUURRNNNNSSS!!!!

I ate 1 perfectly ripe pineapple, and now I have vampire mouth. I pray to God it goes away by tomorrow because I have my first day of work (at a farmer's market, yay!). This is not the first time it has happened (you think I would learn, doh!) I love the taste of pineapples, but it makes me question some things. Maybe we are not meant to eat them? A lot of people seem to be in pain when they eat a whole pineapple. Also, the skin is hard to peel without a knife. How would we manage that out in nature, without knives?

  • I just made a video on this subject because most people are buying pineapples they think are ripe "yellow all over" but they are actually not ripe.. You want one that is yellow with orange.. I have had pineapples destroy my mouth but yesterday i bought a perfectly ripe one in Chiang Mai which was organic and it was so sweet and it did not destroy my mouth! All the ones i see everywhere else here that look ripe are not!

  • As far as I know there is an enzyme called bromelaine in the raw pineapple (and other exotic fruits) that helps to split proteins and attacks your skin which is why it burns. But not everyone has this sensitivity, sadly I do. It doesn't matter how ripe the pineapple is, when I'm in brazil and we pick them off perfectly ripe they still burn. It's hearbreaking because pineapple is one of my fave fruits.

Once you heat it over 70 degrees the enzyme is no longer there and you can perfectly eat it without any pains.
I drink organic pineapplejuice that has been pasteurized - not the best tho but at least I can still enjoy pineappleflavour which I love so much and I bake cakes with pineapple in them :-) so I just enjoy it "cooked".

    • Interesting, I never heard of bromelaine before thank you for sharing Yana! I will try slightly heating them before eating and see what happens :)

  • i have also been wondering this - i have heard that a truly ripe pineapple wouldn't make your mouth burn.  I guess i have never encountered one of these pineapples!

    • Sadly, neither have I Cristina *sigh* It's a shame, they taste AMAZING!

  • Although the pineapple seemed ripe it wasn't. You won't find a ripe pineapple in the U.S. unless you grow it yourself and don't pick it till it is fully ripe and golden. Anything you find in the market has been picked too soon and they don't ripen properly. I wouldn't bother with pineapple unless you move somewhere where it is actually picked ripe.
    • Ah, yes I have heard of this being the case. Pineapples don't grow in Thailand do they? I will be visiting next year and wonder if I could sample one there.

      • KiwiKween - Durianrider says the pineapple in Thailand is really good. But it seems as if Yana is saying ripeness doesn't matter. Which is surprising to me because I have always heard it had to do with it being picked too soon. So this is good to know. Sucks cause a good pineapple is so amazing
