Suggestions for running on pavement, long distance

Ok everyone, I'm wanting to start running longer distances but the shoes I have make me legs and ankles hurt after 15-20 minutes. I'll be running on pavement/cement cause it's what's in my neighborhood. There's no way to avoid the pavement or else I'd buy vibrams. Anybody know of a really good shoe that keeps your knees & legs upported well while running and don't result in aches?

Thanks everyone :)

  • Thanks Vincent!  Did you find a specialist to recommend your shoes or did you research yourself?

  • Thank you, Myra. I'm excited to try them in the future. Even if I find they're unpleasant over time on concrete I'll try to go on trails more. Thanks for your time!

  • Thanks Hoopmama, I'm really considering the vibrams Bikilas myself, as I'm trying to find a good shoe store that specializes like you said. I think vibrams ar my best bet, I'm just gonna search my options still.

Thanks for your suggestion & time though!

    Best Wishes!

  • i love vibrams, and i ran on pavement with them for several months and i always enjoyed it, but i realized after a few months that i started having lower back pain pretty severely at the same time that i had started to run with the vibrams, and once i stopped doing that the back pain went away almost immediately. also, i am thin, not overweight, although i do have scoliosis, but that has never caused me pain before so i don't think it's related.

now i run with brooks glycerins and they work fine for pavement, although i do miss running with vibrams. it's so much more fun to run barefoot/with vibrams, but i just don't think they can support me enough on pavement. running on treadmills with them doesn't bother me though, but who likes to run on treadmills?

oh and props to durianrider for doing a review on vibrams cause that's what helped me make the connection, and i now run with the shoes he recommends. they're actually the only ones that fit my foot well. every single other pair that i tried at sports authority had some problem with it one way or another, so i would also recommend brooks.

    • I'm glad you found the right shoes for you, and thanks for your suggestion!

  • Thank you so much! I'm excited to try them I've just been worried about their support on pavement. I live in the desert too, so lots of rocks that could easily go through the bottoms. I can't wait to try them now.

  • Really? No pain at all? I'm overweight for now so it's a big issue for me.
