Unsupportive Parents

Hi there,

I use to have an eating disorder (over a year ago) and have been vegan for about 10 months now. My parents support me being vegan (somewhat) but now that I am trying to be HCLF Vegan and eating fruits all day and cooked carbs (+veggies) for dinner they think it is just my "eating disorder" talking and completely disapprove of it saying "thats not normal eating" etc etc etc. I dont know what to do, whenever the subject comes up its like they have no intention of listening to me at all, they have already made up their minds and just dont care what i have to say.

Please help me, I just dont know what to do anymore. If anyone has any advice I would greatly, greatly appreciate it.

  • let go of trying to gain approval from people who dont know what there talking, even when them people are your parents! worked for me.

  • You could try telling them that you are trying an 'experiment' based on a great deal of anecdotal evidence and the advice of some knowledgeable doctors.  If you educate yourself and use the proper words in a calm manner, they may relax.  Tell them the names of the literature that has you curious to try this experiment.  By unacknowledging their concern and talking with them directly about it, you can bridge the gap together.  They wil feel heard and hopefully recognize that you are making an adult decision for your life.  Try to remember that they are likely acting the way they do out of concern for you, however misguided it may be.

    • Yea i tried telling them Im just testing it out but I guess I need to reinforce it more. Thank you, this is really good advice :)

  • I just tune it all out. I've been eating like this for over 2 years and i guess it was some new revelation that I didnt eat dair products. Mind you i've already had this tense discussion once before with them But I guess they forgot. They didnt like my shirt that said "go vegan you cow sucking perverts" and it had a pick of a cow and kids sucking the milk directly. They said that it was offensive. I said whats offensive? the cow rape that takes place so that you can have the milk? The fact that my shirt is just making a statement but your actually take part? The Veal industry? The fact that the mama cow crys when the baby is taken away is that what you find offensive by my shirt? I was just really laying it on thick. Well they but stuck there noses in the air and HMPH! and that was that. well later my step mother talks to my wife and warns her that I'm going to get Osteoperosis later in life from not eating dairy LMFAO my wife was like lol he gets plenty of calcium. I was like I wish i woulda been there for that comment! I think I already had that debate with her the first go around and explained that its all the animal protein that robs your bones of calcium but I guess she wasnt listening.

People are just ignorant and dont want to do there homework. They wanna toot there horn but not actually go and read the facts.

Even non vegan doctors will warn about dairy its nothing new. my doc isnt vegan and he'll even say quit eating meat rarara.

I'd ignore them. They are condistioned to think what they think is "normal" run the calories in cronometer and show them that. or show them how people eat in other countries etc..

    • haha great story Im glad your wife supports you :) yea I was thinking about showing them a day on cron o metre, thanks for the advice! :)

  • Whenever I hear stories like this it makes my head want to explode.

They have a very narrow worldview.

That would seem like a normal way of eating in India.
