Uric Acid from Fructose

I got this email from Lucas Rockwood, who is a young hot yoga teacher in Thailand.

He follows dr.s M. Hyman and Mercola... who claim that

Uric acid overload is often caused by too much fructose (not beef).

Does any of you pay attention to any of these doctors, ever? Have you heard of this before?
It is hard to believe it....and then again, there is the catch word: 'often', which could depend on
the depth of their studies regarding this.

Both doctors I believe promote non-vegan ideas, so I don't follow them closely, but such a claim raised my eyebrows.

  • We dont know anything else about you.

    Vegan?

    How long?

    811?

    Sleep

    Sport

    Past health history etc.

When it comes to UA, 7.5 is pretty much the same as 5.9. It can fluctuate more in a day. When we are a newbie our tests dont mean too much but after 5-10 years etc then we can start to see patterns forming.

Does that make sense? Its like a newbie runner saying 'Ive got a sore shin, what does that mean?'.

  • Shall do. Thanks.
  • Well its always great to be objective to debunk subjective claims.

I just got my blood work back from the lab and my uric acid levels were checked. They were .17 and the range is .20-.50

So I would be in the top 5 fruit eaters in the world via volume, and my uric acid levels are UNDER the normal range..how does that work? Ive been eating loads of fruit since becoming a vegan 9 years ago after reading fit for life. My uric levels ALWAYS come under the normal range and I get a lot of bloods done cos I love stats. :)

Uric acid overload from fruit? DEBUNKED! :)
    • Thank you all, bless your hearts for calming mine. I haven't eaten animals for 2 decades, so I was not trying to justify anything, but these two shmuckers doctors made me wonder for a second (until I came here for some great debunking replies!).
      • Check out my latest youtube vid. I provide my urate and urea levels.

  • Dear Yogaranka,
I would be very surprised if any high fruit eater got issues with uric acid.
People can cite studies in laboratories, but if we look at actual people; I do not think there would be any high fruit eaters, living a healthful life, who got problems because of excess uric acid.
My father, on a SAD diet, gets painful joint issues because of excess uric acid. Each time he stays with us and eats a vegan diet with plenty of fruit, his joint pain ceases, then it starts again when he goes back home and eats animal products again.

  • Thanks a bunch, Keenan. A sigh of relief.

Also teaches me a lesson to read further, instead of letting those dark clouds over my clear sky.

Was this common knowledge? How come such highly esteemed individuals emphasise fructose, and even suggest that animal consumption is better than fructose?....of course they don't say where the fructose comes from....they let us assume it's from fruit, since I don't eat processed foods, thus no high-fructose-corn-syrup for me.
    • actually the fructose/uric acid thing just came up here the other day on a thread on a podcast by Bob Lustig who's another one of these paleo doctor types:

I of course mentioned the uric acid/excess protein/deamination connection to offer a different perspective.

but it's quite common among these paleo doctors to blame most/all health problems on fructose particularly HFCS. I think mercola takes it a step farther and says it's bad to eat too much fruit as well.. that's not what lustig sez. but in any case HFCS and other refined carbs are bad for us no question but they're trying to get us to overlook the health conditions that animal products contribute to, because well that's what they like to eat I guess! oh and don't miss harley's post near the end of the thread on the above link.. he's always got a way of putting things into perspective.. plus a little bit of humor :D
