Vitamin Deficiencies?

So my understanding is that a lot of the soil is deplete of many nutrients and we aren't eating the food fresh in most cases from the tree so our natural diet, fruit and veg, aren't as high in nutrients as they should be. And that people on a SAD diet are getting supplements through fortified foods like milk, bread, cereal, pasta, juice, etc. so we can become deficient eating only whole natural foods grown in deficient soil, but is this not true if we are eating majority of it organic, local, homegrown? Or is it only for some people it can happen eating conventional food depending on where its coming from and personal issues? Can someone please clarify this for me..

I live in a cold climate so I started taking a vitamin D supplement because its hard to get sun for half the year and I am showing symptoms of a deficiency-skin infections, bone pain, depression, muscle weakness. I decided to look up vitamin deficiency symptoms and found that the symptom of dry eyes and sensitivity to bright light which I've been having both really bad lately is a sign of a vitamin A deficiency and it said it can lead to blindness :/ And also deficiencies of a lot of the vitamins cause things that I've been having like susceptibility to infections, fatigue, nervousness, dizziness, disorientation, trouble breathing, chest pain, mouth sores, etc, etc. so so many symptoms its crazy, I don't even feel normal anymore. I was undereating for a while(I didn't realize how much fruit you had to eat) and not eating greens so now I'm working on eating enough calories from fruit and a lot of greens. Do you think the symptoms were because of deficiencies just from not eating enough and once I do these symptoms will go away?

  • The only way to know for sure if you have deficiencies is to get a blood test. It's more definite than just going by symptoms and more or less guessing.

You can also use a nutrion tracking service like cronometer.com to make sure your intake if various vitamins and minerals is sufficient. Vitamin D and B12 are to things that quite a few people on this lifestyle supplement with and they are also the two things your doc will most likely want to check if you mention you are vegan (unless they, like my doc, barely know what a vegan is!). Good luck!

    • is there certain tests you have to get to be accurate? like for b12 you have to get a uMMA test to be accurate. what about the other things, is a bloodtest good?
