Hey maybe it gets more views here than "Fitness"? Please move or delete if this is a big no no. Someone who uses pedals can maybe read this and comment?

Researching bike pedals/bike shoes, to use for Ironman. Read a bunch online like the article below, and talked to the LBS, still not really sure which way to go. Durian Rider suggests Mountain Bike style in his videos, because you can walk around with them.

1. Need the pedals/shoes for Ironman Triathlon

2. I also commute to work 50 miles a week total

3. My knees have been torn and hurt repeatedly. SPD pedals with mountain bike shoes sound like a nice easy option, but would something with more Float like Look pedals/shoes put a little less stress on my knees? One of the main reasons I haven't used clip ins, even though I ride so much, is I like to be able to move my feet freely, and shake my legs out, if my knees don't feel so hot. Will one type of pedal be a little easier on easier knees?

4. Cycling is my main mode of transport, most days I ride through the city in HEAVY TRAFFIC, with no shoulders or bike lanes. So something where I could clip out QUICKLY in case a car is swerving at me fast, or I need to hop on a curb because a car invades my lane is very important.

But I would also like something that will help me get a good time for the bike leg of the Ironman.

Is there anything that can do it all?  If I have to get two pairs of shoes down the road, one for racing and one for training rides around town through heavy traffic, I'm okay with that.

Is it possible to sometimes clip in and sometimes not clip in with the same bike pedals?

  • Shimano A530 spd with any mountain bike shoe of your choice. Id run velcro straps as they are easy to get on and off. The A530 can also be used with sneakers as its one side flat and other side clip in.

    This is a good vid.

Spd have the best float and also best for running thru transitions. Ive done duathlons and Im ALWAYS the fastest thru transition due to my shoe choice. I laugh at how behind the times athletes are who use road style shoes and pedals for a duathlon/triathlon.

Get a power meter and sit around 1-3 watts per kg during the bike leg. If you are on EPO and full time pro then 4w/kg haha. ;)

    • THANK YOU HARLEY FOR CHANGING MY LIFE AND GETTING ME OFF MY COUCH AND INTO DOING ENDURANCE SPORTS (did a 100 mile run 2 months ago, doing Ironman Texas in 6 weeks)!!!

Putting all the last minute orders for race gear in now. If you ever decide to do the EPO experiment, it will be awesome to watch your vids, but we don't want you to have heart attack or mess up your health!

Bought your E-Book...it is my secret weapon, after Ironman I will be posting review videos about it on Youtube detailing how it helped me radically change my fitness and health levels!

      THANKS!

  • Ok looks like im going with spd so i can get shoes to walk around in. Since i ride my bike as my means of transportation, ill pretty much be wearing these everywhere then? No such thing as a pedal to clip in and use regular shoes? Just the straps some people use huh?
