....other than "eat meat and dairy" ! haha, I'm pretty sure that we've all been told this at one point or another

I went to the doctors office yesterday to have my b12 levels checked out, and I brought Sally Pacholoks book "could it be b12?' so that I'd be able to show her the different symptoms and tests that I feel I need in order to rule out various deficiencies etc.

I ran into the common difficulties at the doctors, who generally are overly reluctant about taking samples and tests without you being sick or having fatal symptoms already. we ended up arguing for forever about whether it was best to prevent or treat illnesses, and she kept saying things like

'one of our jobs as doctors are also to keep check of the money register. its too expensive to test people that are not sick'

+

'if you have weird habits, thats fine I will not argue that, but then it is your own responsibility to make sure that you are getting all of the nutrients that you need', we can't test you for these things every time you find it convenient" !!

What the fruit ?! I'm showing the signs of a responsible human being by actually preempting sicknesses and whatnot, and she's telling me the opposite !! how else am I supposed to make sure that Im actually absorbing these nutrients ? (it's my first bloodiest as a hcrv)

what are the things that YOU have been told, and what kind of come backs did you bring to the table (or wish that you would've said) ?

  • My sister's doctor told her that if "greens cured cancer we'd be injecting them into everyone."

She just asked about foods she could eat to improve her immune system, and this ego-doctor gave her that answer.

  • When I was 13, my school made all pupils in my class go to a nutritionist.
When it was my turn to get checked out, I told her that I was eating 6 apples in a row as a snack daily ( yes, my body kind of knew what it wanted back then...). Her eyes immediately widened and she told me that this many apples can cause bad blood circulation and I should eat more soups and warm meals instead... LOL

    These people don't know jack-sh... fruit! =D

  • ohhhhhhhhhh you're british!!! omg, sorry to say but brits doc are SO bad... my ex-fiance who was studying at the time in england, he went to the doctor cause he wasn't feeling well, and he had this unquenchable thirst, (guess what symptom that is) the doctor gave him antibiotics for his throat and sent him home, luckily he had roomates and when he started not making sense they took him to the hospital and he fell into a diabetic coma. He was type 1 diabetic, was in the coma for 10 days. His parents are doctors in greece and they took legal action upon the first doctor who misdiagnosed him, cause those symptoms, even I at the age of 18 (at the time) could've told him to check for diabetis. Dunno what happened though.

    • Last time I went to the doctor, he asked me if there was anything I wanted done and I said yup  I want all my blood levels tested for vitamins, minerals and trace elements.  We he said why I told him I was a raw vegan and wanted to keep an eye on things.  He was totally ok with it and even researched a good source of zinc(pumpkin seeds) when my zinc levels came in at the low end of normal without me asking.  Maybe its just luck of the draw or the fact that I am not apologetic or ambiguous about my life, so I don't give anyone the opportunity to comment unless they come to me with some well researched advice otherwise I shut them down.  At 40, I'm able to do that.  At 20 I probably wouldn't have had the confidence.

In my experience with working with doctors at the hospital, most of them will refer on to a dietician for nutrition advice.  GP's have such a broad education, I don't know if I'd be relying on them for nutrition advice.  They are there to fix things not to prevent them.

  • Did you report him? what was that after all?

  • Just tell them you'll pay for the tests from your own pocket, then the cost of the tests can't and shouldn't be an issue. If it is, then he's one of the doctors who just can't bother anymore, so find someone else.

  • Depending on your medical system, unfortunatelly, he's quite right. But you can always say that you'll pay yourself for the tests. Imagine a hypochondriac who reads various symptoms and illnesses online wanting to get tested for something he/she heard about, then multiply it by 2, then 4, then 6, cause a doctor doesn't only deal with you, a doctor deals with people daily that come up to him/her and say "someone told me, i heard about... i was wondering if... just incase of..."

  • Hi Sannabanana,
interesting discussion. I lost my faith in traditional medicine gradually. My mother was constantly visiting doctors with kidney pain, tests never detected anything. I used to suffer (or rather be bothered) from runny nose all year round. No matter what wheather I didn't leave my house without a pack of tissues. My mother suggested it might be an allergy, somehow she managed to develop one to pollen. Personally I believe that all these alergies are results of misuse and overuse of chemicals in our environment.
I went to an immunologist to check it and told him I am vegetarian (by that time I was eating occassionaly fish!). He was like: Ohhh that's not healthy, you can seriosly jeopardize your health.
He booked me for a blood test to check my blood cells and immune system performance.
When the results were back I could see the disapoitment on his face. The funny thing is he was in his early thirties with a fairly big belly, I think he could qualify for being overweight.

When I came to the UK my runny nose improved (perhaps due to climate) and since I stopped eating dairy and sugar 5 months ago it's clear. If I eat some sugar or dairy - phlegm is back.
    • lol I read 'funny nose'...goodmorning:) I just went to my new doctor for the first time two days ago, because of an injury on my hand, and when I asked her about my ongoing dandruff and itchy scalp, she suggested some sort hormonal treatment right away. I told her that since having cut shampoo and hair product out of my daily routine the dandruff had gotten milder as well as the itchiness, but she wouldn't have it. she told me to start using shampoo right away because if I didn't, my excema-like-state would grow worse, SO I repeated to her that by terminating the use of them it had actually improved greatly. but then she just repeated herself as well, and stuck a prescription in my hand. end of discussion ! ...holy fruit !
