  • What these arguments conveniently overlook is the fact that more plants can be produced per hectare than livestock can be; there wouldn't be as much deforestation if there were less cattle already occupying the arable land. Dairy cattle occupy some of the highest quality land in every country, and if there were less dairy farms, this land would provide more than enough food for more people than would have been fed from the dairy output of the same area. Much of this deforestation is also to gain more land to graze cattle rather than grow grains, or if it is the grain is fed primarily to livestock. 

    They also don't really explain the mice thing very well, probably because it hasn't been researched properly. There would certainly be ways to mitigate those issues, this argument is just used to pick at vegetarians and vegans- they think that saying "but the food you eat is associated to mice dying" will make it ok for them to be directly responsible for the death of a great number of livestock, for the sole purpose of their own pleasure.
