When and how did it all start to go wrong?

I was watching a doco the other day on Sigourney Weaver returning to the film location of Gorillas in the mist almost 20 years later and something she said got me thinking about this again. She was sitting watching gorillas play and she said something along the lines of - we share about 98% of our genes with gorillas and all they do all day is play, eat, sleep, and make love. Where did we go wrong?So are there any theories out there as to why we stopped eating a fruit based diet?

  • Thanks for the link! What a great essay. I especially like this part;
    "To `define' a disalienated world would be impossible and even undesirable, but I think we can and should try to reveal the unworld of today and how it got this way. We have taken a monstrously wrong turn with symbolic culture and division of labor, from a place of enchantment, understanding and wholeness to the absence we find at the heart of the doctrine of progress. Empty and emptying, the logic of domestication with its demand to control everything now shows us the ruin of the civilization that ruins the rest. Assuming the inferiority of nature enables the domination of cultural systems that soon will make the very earth uninhabitable."
  • I guess for whatever reasons, humans moved out of the Tropics and a life of sun, fun and fruit.
    With a different climate came different needs and challenges.

    If you have heat and food on tap and a great community, then I guess that there is little need for looking too much outside this for happiness and fulfillment.
