So, yeah, I live in NYC and I can only grow like a 4x4 pallet of greens. The only thing that survives even this far into fall is my kale - and most of that is gone as I really like a kale smoothie at night - not a big fan of kale salad. I'd rather drink it!

What are you doing or what can you suggest for smashing it in during winter here in the colder part of the world? I can buy some decent organic fruit ... usually. But there are times when weather prevents deliveries and ... I don't know, I hate having my entire diet consist of stuff that's flown/trucked in.

My list:

Bananas

Apples

Pears

Dates/Dates/More Dates

Squash

Sweet potatoes

Carrots

Add to this list, please!!!!!!

  • You should also include... rice, pasta, and dried fruit.  I'm from Colorado.  Already headed in the 20F degrees.  Not only is is hard to find high calorie fruits that are also cheap, but it's hard to be as hungry for fruit when your cold.  Any advise on how to stay hungry?

    • Regarding winter...

I have found that in all seasons, fruit helps regulate my body temperature and emotions.  Starchy foods get me all over the place from extreme hot to cold and moody.

There are a few others who feel this way too.

Just a thought.  You guys can experiment both ways.

      Peace, PK

PS here is another fully raw gal...http://www.40belowfruity.com/

      • Good advice, PK. Thanks. Yeah, I was talking with a friend this morning about differing reactions to starch. Interesting. Like you said, we're all an experiment of one.

    • Thanks for the great advice. I guess on being hungry ... maintaining appetite for fruit in the cold ... what works for me is just hammering it on climbing or running or cross country skiing. Any adventure where I'm like really having fun. Makes me hungry and specifically for fruit - like hungry and thirsty combined which is where fruit shines for me. You can pretty much have some crazy fun outdoors in CO winter, right?

  • Oranges are my winter staple with bananas at a close second.  I also prefer iceberg lettuce in winter.  I get sweet romain during the warm months, but then it gets bitter.

I never eat organic and am alive and well.

I am not sure where you live exactly, by NYC is famous for its ethnic shops like Indian and Pakistani and Jewish.  You can probably find lots of variety at lower costs, even imported exotics, and truly raw nuts and seeds.

    Peace, PK

    • You're right on all of that - and I do go for some vegan restaurant fare once in a while - it's just never quite as tasty as what I make myself.

I'll try more oranges this winter - haven't really emphasized them before. Good idea, thanks.

  • I'm facing the same predicament a couple states north.... NH is getting colder and I'm already missing ripe mangoes! I stick with bananas and dates usually, though when pineapples are around they ripen up fine too!
    • Just bought a pineapple today! Yeah, I can down a ripe pineapple in one sitting. Good luck in NH. Must be a fun place to get outdoors in winter.

      • It really is, the beauty makes up for the cold! One of my favorite smoothies is pineapple, dates and coconut water...absolutely delecious..
        • Yum! I love adding pineapples, too.
