Sorry for all the posts guys haha but I'm wanting to pick some fruity brains as currently I'm based up north near Liverpool and Manchester and go to the fantastic Unicorn Grocery for all my fruit and veg and LOVE it! I'm rather sad to leave it behind as I will be moving to Wolverhampton, all being well, in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone in the West Midlands area knew of any good organic fruit and veg Co-ops/farms to get all my supplies from?

I'll be near Penn, Wombourne, Himley, Bobbington, Bridgenorth, even Codsall isn't too far.

I will be working in central Birmingham and I know there's a food market there but I don't think I'll be able to commute back on the train home with all the bags of food I normally end up with! haha Also not sure how organic that all is!

Any help will be great! :)

  • Hi Gwen, I am originally from Wolverhampton, my mum still lives in Penn, so I am there once a month.  Wolverhampton has a good Saturday market where you can buy fruit and veg cheaply but not necessarily organic.  There is a little  Asian supermarket close to the market that sells fresh Iranian dates in 500g boxes for £1.45, they are not organic but very sweet and nice....please don't buy all their stock at once :)   There was an organic vegetable box scheme in nearby Stourbridge that I helped set up 15 years ago.  I think it may still exist in some form, but stourbridge is 15 miles from Penn and not helpful to you without a car.   Best Wishes on the move.

    • I know this is not organic :P But ASDA are currently selling pitted dates at £1.20 for half a kilo, i can't say what they taste like i haven't tried them yet. I agree last time i was there Wolverhampton market was one of the best around for fruit and veg stalls, Dudley was good too.

    • Hi Andy

Can you get medjool dates from the Wolves market? Or is it a case that they're the same price as everywhere else? I'm thinking of going up to the Brum wholesale market soon to see what I can get, just need to make sure non-traders can go there :-)

    • I haven't been to Wolvo in at least five years Daz. According to  Sam on this thread  anyone can go to Brum wholesale.

    • I've just emailed the markets manager to make sure I can buy from the wholesale market if I'm not a trader. It's an early start for it but it'll be worth it if I can get 5kg boxes of medjools for £20-£30 :-)

  • Im further north than you bud the otherside of Bromsgrove nr Halesowen. Thanks for the offer tho. Lol last year i was living in brickfields :P

    • Ok m8 cheers for that

  • Thanks for all the info m8. If i ever get a motor again, ( probably will for the summer ) i'll check it out. The money saved would allow me more money for the car in the 1st place

    Cheers

  • Hi Sam, do you need to be a trader to use the market?

  • Hi, i hope this isn't bad information but a couple of years back there was an organic farm that sold to the public along the rabbit run (  B4176 ). It's been a couple of years since i have been that way. All i remember is that it was near to one of the biggest car boot sales in the West Midlands.

    GL.
