What do you guys do at sleepovers?

Hey guys, so one topic I really wanted to get your opinions on is sleepovers. At least one night of the week I stay over at a friend's house or have a friend over to my house. The problem I'm having though is when I sleepover at someone else's house and i don't know what to eat. Countless times I've woken up and my friends mom or someone has made a huge breakfast of buttermilk pancakes, bacon, cinnamon rolls and etc. I never know what to say or do so I usually eat all the fruit if there's any there. Often times though there is nothing raw, let alone vegan, for me to eat and I'm forced to either refuse to eat the food they made for me, or just force myself to eat the food which is usually what I end up doing :(. I know it'd be easier to just tell people when I go over to their houses that I'm a raw vegan but I'm so afraid of doing that because I know they'll think I'm super weird because of it. What would/do you guys do in my situation?

  • I realize this post is 3 years old but I'll respond in case people still would like a response. So when I stay over at a friends house I just bring bananas to freeze and make a smoothie with the next morning. Best smoothie ever is 4 frozen bananas, vanilla protein powder, chocolate almond milk or cashew milk, and Peanut butter powder! Anyway, I bring that for a backup in case they don't have fruit, juice, vegan bread and peanut butter ect.. I also toss a can of vegan veggie soup in my bag in case I need to make that while the rest eat non-vegan food.

  • I am hardly a young un, but for breakfast, just bring some packets of instant oats and a few nanas or oranges. The parents would just have to add hot water to it. I bet they would think you are pretty mature to have thought about taking care of yourself enough to think ahead and that you are a strong young person to stick to what you feel is best.

  • I don't get to go to sleepovers often, to be honest. I never get invited to any and most of my friends are too busy, considering the advanced classes we're taking. Though there is one girl who I've slept over with recently and has become a great friend of mine!

Her Mom says she doesn't get the whole 'vegan thing' and so we go grocery shopping. It has been accepted as an inside joke that I will wake up at four in the morning (as I always do) and eat a ton of oranges. Though this friend does love to cook, and we've made low fat vegan pancakes and vegetable stir fry before.

Consider bringing food to sleepovers that is easy to carry and will not get squished, such as dates, apples, pears, and oranges. Remember to stay carbed up and hydrated! And if you are eating a giant bowl of salad and your friend gives you a weird look, amaze them with your fabulous cow impression!

  • Ah it's so tricky! I find that going to people's houses the hardest! You obviously don't want to be rude so often I do the same as you and end up eating animal products I don't want. Just like you, I know I should just tell them, but unless they are a really close friend, I feel really embarrassed! I notice this post was nearly two years ago now! Did you find a way to get over this problem? Or do you still struggle? Let me know :)

Also, on the topic of sleepovers, I had a girly sleepover (with a non-vegan friend) and made sure we used products which were all vegan and cruelty free and she was fine with it! She barely noticed it to be honest :) check out the little vlog we made of the evening :) silly and cheesy but we had a good giggle making it :)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTxHiUwEIPA

  • yesss I do the whole wait till im done with dinner before i go, and I also bring fruit with me if I know that friend wont have any or a little amount. They understand and rather have me do that then eat all there food or be hungry. :)

  • Thanks for the advice guys, it was pretty helpful! I spent the night at a friends house last night and I made sure I brought a water bottle with me so I could stay hydrated. I also found it really helpful to wait until after dinner to go to my friend's so that I could just eat whatever I wanted.

  • One suggestion I have is that you could make something cool like raw coconut-date balls or date and apple bars to take along when you are staying over at a friends, and maybe take some nice fresh fruit too like strawberries or grapes. Then you can share these with your friend and their family, and just eat these foods yoursefl rather than the other options.

  • I just made it clear when I started this lifestyle and all my friends know and respect my choice. They shouldn't think you're weird for it. You could just as easily think they're weird for eating animal products. If I'm going anywhere for an extended stay (overnight at a friends, travelling, etc.) I always take dates or dried fruits with me and just eat my own stuff most of the time unless they also have some fruit or are making a salad.
