In which European countries are the cheapest fruits?

Hi everyone,

from what I know many of us Europeans are not very priveledged with cheap costs of fruit let alon good quality fruits.

I'm aware that fruits in Spain are cheap (and good).

In which other countries are the fruits cheap and good?

What's it like in Portugal? In Malta?

Please give as many details you know about the European countries in terms of the costs and quality of their fruits.

Many thanks in advance!

  • Hi everyone, I live in Switzerland, where of course bananas come after a 3 weeks long sea transport in dark containers... they get here green and it's hard to get them ripe, and not cheap at all,

the up side is you really can find everything and organic as well, to pay for it is another story, I calculated my weekly budget for a 5 persons omnivorous family with a carnivore daddy... we can gat by with about 200€ per week if I cook most of the food,

but if I buy 15 kg bananas and 300 gr nuts/seed and another 15 kg organic fruit, just for myself, the omnivorous budget gets to 160€ for the family and my expenses just for me climb up to 90€  and that's if I can buy bulk...  so really expensive , I try tu juggle with organic and transition cultures and sustainable/transition bla bla... still for a short vacation, fruit is still chaper than eating out at the restaurant and I have a couch for couchsurfers ;-)

  • Hi Athena!

Serbia, where I live, is cheap if u buy the fruits I actually like the best - the "ugly" fruit, the fruits that is not perfectly shaped and colored and has no shiny wax. This is my favorite and sale people sell it cheap since the mainstream think it is inferior fruit. However, we have nothing certifies organic. :(

    • I've heard of the ugly fruit. :)

I can't afford organic anyway. But Serbia sounds nice regarding the fruits.

    • U r welcome! Be my guest, no kidding. If you wanna come for a weekend, just let me know! I am always looking forward to new 811 friends!

    • Awww thanks Marina! :) I do remember your invitation from last year as well. I won't forget that. I'd love to see Serbia and of course meet you. I will let you know when that's possible.

PS: Are you familiar with the singer Lepa Brena? I have a song from her. Unfortunately I don't understand a word, but the music sounds great. :)

    • Lepa Brena - of course, everyone knows about her. She was very popular, but she is not singing anymore. However, some of her songs are still played, especially at wedding parties and similar celebrations. I am not a big fanb of Serbian folk music, but I know that my roommates in NYC loved it.

    • That's cool! Can you tell me what "cik pogode" means? That's the song of hers that I have. :)

    • Haha! It means "try to guess" and rest goes... "what I like, what is good for me..." :D
