Conquering capitalism?

Hiya people. Good to see there's others who have not only freed themselves from cooking but also from capitalism (or at least aspire to both). If I can be defined at the moment it's as an internet musician (http://www.phoeniximago.com/music). I'm really hoping to make a go of this because when I write song I can be honest and calm in a way I cannot in other situations. I value both qualities in myself and others.

Point for discussion: In order to be free from capitalism/consumerism/dependence on oppressive organisations do we actually have to embrace them and master them? What I mean is it's all very well being penniless and proud but it can seriously limit your potential to effect change and be free. Surely a better solution would be to understand how to make insane amounts of money then channel it to good effect. Any opinions?

best of wishes to you all fellow travelers!
Rob

  • My Ideal Freedom is Living out of a backpack, staying on friend's couches or camping, cycling for transport, with a small netbook for communication, education, and entertainment. I'm basically doing this now, I torrent all tv, music, movies, software that I care to. I use Skype as a super cheap phone. My only major expense is food. And now I'm planning to do some serious travelling. Likely a bit more in my current area (Milwaukee), then head east, take the coast to Florida, head West to Cali, and North. Only real obstacle is getting enough income to feed myself and maintain my gear.
    • That's pretty awesome... I've read in a few places that you can forage for (fruit!) food quite effectively in Sicily which is where I want to be next year. That would knock off most of the food expense too. Food gets a whole lot cheaper the closer to the equator you go if you eat 80:10:10!
I'm currently doing some IT contract work online to bring in some cash. You really can do that anywhere. There's also loads of writing jobs etc available. It's worth looking into for freedom sake!
    • Yeah I'd love to do Europe too! An IT job online would be great except I'm not a programmer/have no certs, ect. so that may disqualify me, tho social marketing would be another option I'd be all over...

    • Fascinating. Makes perfect sense. Really if anyone else gets bored or doesn't feel convinced 5 mins in - stick with it and watch to the end! So assuming this isn't a eerily convincing joke I've got two questions.
      1) Have you or do you know anyone who has tried this?
      2) I wonder what similar loopholes exist in UK law (or Italian law since I'm in the process of moving out there - God bless the monstrous Italian bureaucracy!).
    • Thanks. Next week I'll have access to a computer than can view adobe flash things (yay at last!) then I'll look at the vids...

Meanwhile here's what I created this morning: http://skillcom.ning.com/
Basically it's a community site for people to offer things they'd like to do more of and ask for help with things they can't manage. Everything to be given freely. I think this would be an awesome way to live - cooperating and building for the fun of it doing the things you're best at or want to challenge yourself with. Lemme know what you think people. I'm quite taken by this idea:-)
  • I've been trying to figure this out myself. It's those damn taxes. Maybe we should start our own church.
    • Im in..=)
    • My current thinking is sheer boneheaded optimism. If I'm happy then people will want some of it and be willing to pay to get it. I also feel as if money is on of those things that kinda balances out in your life if you just leave it alone to do as it pleases. It's when you get unduly attached or averted (to misquote a famous man) that it becomes a problem. I've previously been too attached...
