What to do with carob!

Hey everyone! I recently (VERY recently) decided that I want to give up cacao powder at home - better to be safe than sorry, right? - and bought me some carob powder today.

But honestly, I don't know what to do with carob powder - I know it has a different taste than chocolate, so I didn't want to just substitute my recipes for chocolate with this without first finding some good carob recipes that were meant for carob, not chocolate.

Please let me know what your favorite carob recipes are. They can be anything - ice cream, "cookies", smoothies, dips, sauces, even savory if you want!

Thanks!

  • What brand of carob did you buy?  I notice that no matter which brand I buy, it doesn't really have ANY FLAVOR AT ALL.  What does your carob powder taste like dry, straight out of the package??  To me, it's kind of earthy and wholesome tasting, but it isn't truly chocolatey, so for me the "chocolate" smoothies were out.  I really didn't find it to be a straight swap for cacao powder AT ALL.  When you try it, if you find a recipe that's really, really good with the carob, BECAUSE of the carob, please post it.

    Thanks.

  • I was raised on carob chips and carob rice dream bars! Hehe :)  Carob powder is perfect for making raw "Larabars", with pureed medjool dates, dried fruit like raisins or apple slices, carob powder, and even a couple of chopped raw almonds, raw sundried coconut meat or sunflower seeds if you choose to eat nuts (I don't because the fat is unnecessary and I don't think it's the best food combining option).  It'd be really easy to make, just blend a large batch in the food processor (start with dates and carob only until pureed), then add in the chewy dried fruit and seeds and pulse until they are roughly incorporated.  Then spread onto a brownie pan lined with wax or parchment paper, and freeze until firm, then cut into bars and wrap them individually!

This is what I would consider a 'treat' recipe - obviously it's better to not combine so many types of foods very often but it's a convenient option for a treat or portable snack.
