6am workout, eat before or after

On September first I will begin the Banana Island diet and start going to the gym. I plan to go to the gym at 6am (before my brain discovers what my body is doing lol), but I was wondering should I get up extra early to drink my banana smoothie or is it okay to workout on an empty stomach?

  • I'd have a big dinner to top off the glycogen stores and then go to train fasted at 6 am, following that by your breakfast.

If you feel the need to eat something, eat one or two bananas and that's it.

    • What would you recommend if you are living in a hot hot place, and its going to hit 100 degrees by noon? Drink more water obviously...but going without food for too long on these days can lead to literally shutting down/passing out. Wondering what other people do.

      • Just water, unless you're going to be out there for a long time (anyway, I'd not recommend anyone to go out to exercise with a 100ºF temperature for hours).

Where I live now it's summer and the temperatures reach  ~110-115ºF at noon. I NEVER exercise at that time.

These last couple of weeks I've been going in the morning, when the sun is already up, and the temperature tends to be already around 86-88ºF. I've gone for 2 hours runs without eating anything before or during the run, and only drinking some water.

  • Hi,
Actually, u can make your smoothie and sip it while your working out. It's liquid so not really requiring digestion. Plus you will be hydrating at the same time. I've done this for several yars and it works fine
  • What kind of work out?

If I am running 15 miles or less, or riding 50 or less miles....I don't need to eat.

If I run 15-25 miles or ride 50-100+ miles, then I need to either eat a light meal like a whole watermelon if I'm running or swimming, or if cycling I also have the option of having a huge bananas smoothie.

Either way Id drink 1.5 liters of water first thing in the morning. If Its a hot day, 90-110 degrees, I drink 2.5 Liters of water before I leave the house to work out. For me its more about water on a hot day, than eating a lot of food.

  • Drink some coconut water beforehand if you can. Works wonders for a.m. workouts!

  • I recommend beginning the day with a quart of water, workout empty stomach or at most with a single piece of fruit, then feast afterward.  Your fuel stores are in place from your quality eating the day before.

The more intense your workout, the less you'll want in your tum, believe me :)

  • Hi :)

I usually eat 2 oranges before working out or you can try to workout with an empty stomach.

Some people don't deal well with an empty stomach, so it's up to you.

  • after.. working out on a full stomach isn't good..  your body should put it's energy towards digesting anyway..

maybe one or two bananas before or whatever but not too much.
