Accosted by Stranger in Mexican Restaurant

I wanted to share my experience with you that happened this past Sat. night. My husband received a bonus from work and wanted to take the family out for a Mexican dinner at their favorite restaurant. I thought it best to go because this doesn't happen too often and I wanted to celebrate with my family. We have 2 teenage sons and a 9yr old son. I'm the only one eating raw vegan and my youngest is vegan.

Everyone ordered their meal and I asked for a tossed salad with extra raw veggies and pica de gallo for dressing. It was small and not good...too cold and no flavor, but I ate it because I was hungry. Now, across from us was an elderly couple eating a beef fajita. The smell of that cooked, steamed meat was a lot to take and I held my breath as the waiter come by with it!

After the elderly couple finished their meal, they had to walk past us to leave. The man stopped at our table, leaned over to me and said "I never thought I would come to a Mexican restaurant and watch someone eat a salad!" At this point, I thought he was admiring my will power in making a healthy choice, so I started smiling and laughing. Then, he said, "It's DISGUSTING!! DISGUSTING!!" and proceeded to walked away. I yelled back, "It's what I love!"

I couldn't believe this stranger had the audacity to comment on what I was eating. My husband was so angry and my children were in shook. Now, I try to raise my boys right and knowing they were witnessing my response and behavior I told them, "You have to let these things roll off your back. You must be the bigger person. That man was ignorant and we just ignore people like that...it's fine."

I left wondered whether this senior was kidding or being really obnoxious. My husband and eldest believed he was serious and if he was joking, it definitely didn't go over well.
Unbelievable!

  • That's just weird. I mean why does he care? And how is it disgusting? It's a salad...I'm thinking there is something wrong besides his dislike of salads. Obviously it has nothing to do with you.

  • From my experience a small percentage of elderly people take every bit of crap from there lives into old age and become extremely bitter, resentful, jealous, bitter etc. The vast majority are wonderful people and you can learn a lot from them. Dont let this minority ruin your evening out, instead let it help you reinforce your own beliefs.
