Can i eat gluten? and what to do about iodine?

~february 2014 i started eating fruit only i pooped basically after every meal, pooping out the meal before looking the same as it went in, but with a brown tan.

~june 2014 started eating white rice and lettuce in evening stool still good.

~august 2014 i tested B12 and thyroid, B12 was <37 which i supplement now, but doesn't have much to do with these questions.. the thyroid was good.. probably somewhere around this time or a bit later i started eating things like whole wheat pizza or more cooked food in general in the evening (raw till 4).. stool still good.

~october-december 2014 or so in hospital in search for a reason of B12 shortage they also tested thyroid which was good (TSH 2.56 mU/l). stool was still good.

~somewhere in the beginning of 2015 my digestive system started to degenerate, stool became very little with effort, also smelly gassiness.

~may 2015 i theorized celiac dissease that it was because of the introduction of gluten and that celiac was also the cause of my lifelong genetic B12 shortage, so i stopped eating gluten, nothing changed though.

~october 2015 i went to a different hospital to find out what was wrong with my intestines, be it celiac or something else.. at first they did a lot of blood testing of which everything was good, except my thyroid (TSH 5.2 mU/l, free T4 was on the low end (as far as i have googled standard values) 10.4 pmol/l), which was retested to verify in december, but still the same. stool was also tested for all sorts of things but nothing was wrong, so no signs of chrons dissease or anything.

~january 2016 they took some tissue from my small intestine with a duodenoscopy. i also let my vitamin D be tested at my doctor, which was low (43nmol/l or ~17ng/ml) and i'm now supplementing.

In the meantime i did my research on the thyroid and my conclusion is that not gluten were the cause of my digestive problems, but the lack of iodine due to a higher intake of goitrogenic foods, causing my thyroid not being able to produce enough hormones. And cause i refuse to limit goitrogenic foods, i should take care of an adequate iodine intake.. at the moment i'm adding iodized kitchen salt here and there, i've also bought nori but i'm not going to eat that.. it smells and tastes like rotten fish.

As far as results of the added iodine through kitchen salt.. after the first day my stool was how i like to see it, however the day after was sort of diarrhea and after that it was back to how it was.. but yesterday and today it has been how it should again, i'm just not cheering yet till this has kept on for a week.

But how would you supply the iodine? buy a supplement seems to be the easiest i think and better then eating iodized kitchen salt..?

~basically now a week ago because i didn't get any results or anything i called my doctor to see if she got something.. and she had so i requested the lettres from both hospital visits.. but as far as the tissue goes there were no signs of inflammation whatsoever, but what brings in the confusion for as far if i can consume gluten or not is concerned is that it also said that my HLA DQ2/DQ typing was DQ2, DQ5, which apparently means a high risk for celiac and the lettre says that despite that at the moment no celiac could be diagnozed.

But does this mean i can eat gluten or does this mean that my intestines were just not inflamed cause i hadn't eaten gluten for months?. anyway, being able to eat gluten would make the cost of living a lot lower, since i pay 3,89 euro for a 500g bag of gluten free pasta compared to 79 cents for a 500g bag of wheat pasta (in both cases organic).

  • i am thouroughly confused.. most iodine supplements have dosages that say overoveroverdose according to the information i get.

i check out dr gregers videos saying 1000 microgram is too much or whatever, yet in the comments a moderator says iodoral is a good choice..
i google iodoral and the least dosage is 12.5mg which is 12.5 times more then the so called safe upper limit.

    • I take 800 mcg and I'm doing great. Here is a great video on the specific amount we need.

      • What supplement do you use , i can find some supps with a decent dose of 150 or 200 micrograms, but they contain all sorts of horrible ingredients as well. The other stuff i find contain more then 10 fold per dosage of what dr greger mentions to be the upper limit (1000 micrograms a day) i even find people claiming that 50 milligrams (or 50000 micrograms) should be the minimum intake and japanese inland people already get at least 12.5 milligram or something.

This really frustrates me i can't buy something or take something in with so much wildly conflicting data (and crappy ingredient lists)

        • I now ordered paleo minerals' iodine drops.. they seemed to be the cleanest in terms of ingredients... ethanol being the worst part, but then again what is one drop of that daily...

  • Hey Taka :)

You can get vegan certified, organic sushi sheets. They are very expensive (where I live anyway) but do not smell or taste like fish.

    Good luck :)

  • Be carefull supplementing iodine!!!

Make green smoothies to facilitate greens intake and you will see how you improve very soon.

      • Hi Edd, I'm just saying to be careful and do your reaserch on the field before supplementing with Iodine as it can affect your thyroid and end up in thyroid damage.

I had to supplement as my levels were low, and started with a low dosis of 200 micrograms. I felt very good at the begining but then, after a month I've started feeling so tired, I wasn't myself anymore...

I found out that the iodine was affecting my thyroid very badly and my hormons were by effect completely unbalanced.

I had to stop taking the supplement and it took me a couple of months to start feeling better.

Here I leave you the link of a video of a low fat raw vegan couple and their experience with Iodine.

I know it won't affect everyone in the same way but just know that this can happen and be alert.

I hope this helps, take care!

  • Get your thyroid perixydasr antibodies tested. If they are high, it won't be the iodine, but Hashimoto's. You will then eventually need levothyroxine. If they're normal, supplement iodine.
Coeliac screening and endoscopes/ biopsies won't be conclusive if you were avoiding gluten. Ask for them to be repeated whilst you take gluten ( for at least 6 weeks) to see if you have or not coeliac disease.
With regards your B 12 , ask for intrinsic body autoantibodies to be tested. If high, you have pernicious ( autoinmune) anaemia and need B 12 to be given by injection, oral supplementation WILL NOT work. If they're normal carry on with oral supplements ( as long as they've returned your B12 to normal).
If everything comes back negative, it's odd that you have chronic diarrhoea, you will need stool cultures, faecal elastase and faecal cal protectin to be tested, in case you are suffering from bile acid malabsorption, sprue or inflammatory bowel disease.
Take care, and don't let them blame all this on veganism!

    • thanks

i doubt it's hashimoto that suddenly is kicking in, but maybe i can ask for that next time when i get my thyroid and vitamin D tested, which is in march, but that's too problematic cause i have to call and get a response etc, while now i can just walk in any time and get that tested, cause it's already in the system that i can come do that..

As far as B12 is concerned they've tested all that but i had no lack of intrinsic factor whatsoever, eventually they referred me and my aunt to go to a geneticist to check out DNA but i refused..

And i'm injecting anyway i never even considered oral supplementation. that it's a genetic absorption issue should be obvious since me, my father, my aunt and my cousins all have it.

I have no chronic diarrhea, it's not diarrhea, just a small amount of condensed poop.

As far as the stool tests your talking about they did all that there's no issues with that.

They're not blaming any of this on veganism at least not in my face, only the doctor that called me (no idea who that is) with panic in his voice giving me the b12 blood test result said it's because of my diet, i said no it's not i was hoping for this result cause it explains a lot to me.. and a b12 deficiency isn't created over a couple of months. in the report from the hospital it also says it's unlikely that it's because i'm vegan cause that would take a lot longer.

  • I agree we can get too much iodine so be careful. Here are some videos from nutritionfacts.org to look through.
