Confusion about Iceberg Lettuce

While reading the post that was exclusive to only people who had been doing hcrv for two-plus years (about dental care), someone suggested the following website for figuring out which foods were 'good' versus 'bad'. I was surprised to see iceberg lettuce on the good side. Like most people, I have always heard there isn't much nutrition in iceberg lettuce, but this website recommended it highly. I have to know- what's the deal with eating iceberg lettuce?

  • There are also reports of people being admitted to hospitals after injecting themselves with lettuce extracts, and papers about smoking lettuce.

David Wolfe follower wouldn't try something that crazy!

  • LOL! :) I did run out and get a head, but then got distracted by this lovely, HUGE, watermelon. But I'm looking forward to a nice crispy salad a little later!

  • lmao omg! That's fascinating!
    XD
    Thanks for posting:p
  • Whew, it's been a rough day, off to the grocery store to score some iceberg lettuce to blaze! ;)

  • That info was too wild!!:) All I could think of is how when I was growing up, iceberg was the only thing we grew in our garden I loved eating it with no dressing. I ate a lot of iceberg lettuce- I wonder if it was because it made me feel good? Honestly, I had never heard any of this about lettuce- I had no idea. I just worked in a lot of restaurants and had always heard there was no reason to eat iceberg. I like iceberg! Thanks for the research!! You never know what you're gonna find, huh?

    • did you use to pick iceberg lettuce in the fridge to eat it in the middle of the night?

  • Iceberg lettuce is fine, it just has a higher water content than a lot of the other greens. So if you think about nutritional density either by carb, protein, fat or vitamin/mineral, versus volume of leaves, it's going to come out lower than some other kinds of greens, but there's nothing wrong with that. In 80/10/10 food is viewed on a per calorie basis anyway. I would say that you would probably want to get organic greens as much as possible, since you don't want chemicals on them, but yeah, I wouldn't think that iceberg is bad, not at all.  :)

    • +1

Also, I like to eat it in the summer because it has such a nice, light, crunchy texture. It is really good in a simple salad with a tahini-tomato dressing. Or tossed with chopped orange pieces.

      • thank you so much for the suggestion, Sultana!

Except that I would find them best suited for the winter... my 'winter' at least...

    • Cool- thanks for your response. Going hcrv has included revamping the way I ate high-fat raw (y'now, it's off topic, but I am glad to know that I wasn't the only one who had stalled out on raw food because of the ridiculous amount of fat I ate- it is good to know I am not alone!) but one of the things I pounded into my brain was that the darker the green, the better it was for me. So I stayed far away from light-green iceberg. Thanks, also, for the reminder about organic iceberg ( do they even grow that? I always see a plethora of greens at Whole Foods, but have never looked for organic iceberg).
