Dear Fruit, I cheated on you......

Dear Fruit, I need to come clean.  A couple of weeks ago I was very broke and stocked up on starch to save money.  Starch!  Oh, what great comfort food!  Potatoes, rice, noodles (they were gluten free)!  Yummy!  I was careful to avoid fat and salt.  And like a good student I hung around the McDougall forum with inquisitive questions and an attitude of enthusiasm.

Well, I was certainly more relaxed on starch!  This is great so far!  So relaxed that I'm not getting up off of the sofa.  And hardly doing my job.  And only doing water aerobics with the other fat chicks at the gym.  Oh, and now I need even more sleep, plus naps.  Well, I didn't need that mental vibrancy anyway.  I guess I'll drink some green tea to try and jump start some energy.  Constipation in, creative spark out.

I practically ended up in a coma.  The mental fog was getting worse every day.  My energy levels plummeted but really the worse of it was it was like the electrical energy drained out of my brain.  Really, my choices of starch were very clean, like sprouted, boiled wild rice eaten plainly with salad, no dressing.  I gave it a couple of weeks to see if I could adjust but it's just getting worse.  I was getting clinically stupid; last night I locked my keys in the my car and had to call a friend for help.

I'm throwing the towel in.  I'm sorry but I'm quite jealous of people who thrive on the McDougall diet.  And frustrated that so many people think I'm making this up.  But I have deep gratitude that there is a solution for me.  So, I'll be eating a heck of a lot bananas the rest of my life, oh well!  My health and vitality get prioritized over everything else in my life.

Thank you Fruit!  Next time we'll seek marital counseling before I cheat on you again.

  • :-) are you still cheating on fruit Dovima ?

  • I agree, fruit is superior... A long, healthy life eating every possible fruit available sounds like a good plan.

Even people on SAD agree and they want to try it.

I always give this advice to "normal" people who inquire:

"Try it for one day: only fruits and greens, no cooked food."

It's like an experiment... because I'm new too... and I would love to have more fruitarians around..

    • I am trying this "experiment" for as many days in a row as I can.

Goal: eat moar raw plants, cut the caffeine.

  • Just checking in here.   I still have the same reaction to the starch.   Bananas treat me a bit the same - not quite as bad.   If I stop taking olive leaf powder I cannot get outta bed..... :((    If I take the herbs.... I am up and functional - and actually able to be quite athletic...... I really do not know what to do at this time.

I read an interesting book by Elaine Gottschall(sp?) - Breaking the Vicious Cycle - The Specific Carbohydrate Diet.... she talks about complex carbs aiding the growth of yeast and other bad bugs in the gut.... it seems this is true... I feel much better on just juicy fruit and greens.... but then I seem to be left wanting something....and I start to lose strength..... oh quite the pickle I'm in here....

  • Me too! Yay for fruit!

  • Wow, I am jelous of you! starch in the form of white potatoes is the only thing my body likes right now! I really miss fruit but I like not being sick all the time! if this fruit allergy keeps up I might get some professional coaching. Again be glad "fruit is the one you can eat!"

    • You may have a salicylate or phenol sensitivity... As you clean up your diet and lifestyle overall you should be able to become less sensitive to them in the future.

    • If you can't get enough fruit, consider going for raw starch... soaked buckwheat, rye, wheat, etc. Gets you the calories without the foggy mind effect. I live on the stuff, along with fruit and veg.

  • Fructose (fruit sugar) is a monosaccharide meaning it can be absorbed directly into your blood.  Starch sugars are polysaccharides and have to be broken down by our bodies.  The process of breaking them down makes us sleepy for a bit.  They both get stored as glycogen which we use for energy, but you can see why fruits would be more "optimal" because they are more easily digested.  *Some fruits contain varying amounts of starch sugars (plysaccharides) like bananas and pumpkin.

We are in part though also made to run off of starches.  Our mouths have only one digestive enzyme known as amylase and it is specifically for breaking down starch.  So fruits might be our most optimal choice, but our digestive systems are well equipped for starches too.

In the end though, its all plants.

  • Brilliant! :)
