I know sometimes dates can get black on the inside and I did find two small bugs inside on of mine, but what is the dirt-like stuff inside some of them? I keep thinking it has to do with the little bugs and maybe it's their droppings; I'm just throwing away the ones with the light brown, dirt-like stuff in them. Am confused!! :)

  • Not saying to eat death bugs or its poop BUT

If bugs want to eat them YOU want to eat them!

    • yes, but the poor bugs have died and might have had diarrhea eating those dates so may not be healthy for people too :)

  • Uh...where did you get your dates? I just ordered some from 7hotdates...

    • I've gotten really excellent dates from 7hotdates! The only thing I'd say about those is if you get a "mushy" (moist) date type, if you are going to keep them more than a couple weeks, you might want to refrigerate them.

      • Will I know when they ship them, will I be able to track it?

        • Hi Chloe, I don't remember if I got a tracking email or not, but I got them pretty quick, I think it was under 5 days. They are pretty responsive to email and you can call them also.

BTW it was here and other raw food websites that their business flourished. It's a neat story and I still remember the lady who designed their site posting messages about 7 hot dates, to check them out. I've ordered from a few different places now, just depends on what I am looking for and what people have, but 7HotDates is a favorite of mine!

P.S. Their dates have had the least little buggies for me. I think they cover the dates with breathable bags at some point to keep pests out.

Its bug poop. Won't kill you. I don't like the taste of it though. I check EVERY date I eat. Having the odd worm in your box dates is a GOOD sign they are organic. NO worms is a BAD sign lol!

    • I went to go wash the poop off the offending dates and then realized I would like to be more sure if that's okay to do before I eat them. What do you think- just wash it all off? I ordered from sheildsdates.com and man, I swear, it's like every fifth date is messed up, although I had really good luck with them in the past. Maybe it's just this batch (it's 15#, though, so it kinda sucks!) I'm thinking I'm going to write the company and see what they say. Thanks for your input, DR, that pic is exactly what they look like and I am not checking every date before poppin em in my mouth!

      • I got my current batch from Shields too and yeah I have found a lot of the stuff and even the dried up worms. I just cute them all open to de-pit them and rinse them all out before eating.

  • Because I was unsure, I didn't wash the bad dates just tossed them. I guess I could just wash them out and eat them- it feels ridiculous to be throwing out dates I had shipped to me from across the country!!
