how to go no poo ?

Im doing my second attempt with going no poo. first time I tried it I simply rinsed my hair with water, and it was a disaster ! my hair got so greasy from it that I didn't feel like leaving my apartment. and it wasn't even dirty beforehand !

so now I wanted to try out the baking soda-approach, hoping for a more gradual transition. - I don't mind my hair being a little greasy during this phase, but I don't want people to think that Im insanitary either ;)

SO today was my first day. It has been 5days since my last hair wash, although normally Ill wait 7-8 days in between washing. I wanted to break the wash-cycle a little early so that the risk of my hair turning out like last time, would be smaller.

step1 - I mixed 3tbs of baking soda w 150ml of water.

step2 - after rinsing my hair in warm water for a couple of minutes, I put the mixture in my hair and massaged it in for another cpl of minutes, and then I rinsed it out completely.

step3 - panic ? I must say that my hair feels really thick and unmanageable ! It hasn't dried yet, so idk how it will turn out, but experience tells me that when it feels like this wet, it wont improve much in its dry state.

what do you say ? do you think that I need to just stick it out, and maybe wash it everyday for a while w the baking soda until my hair adjusts ? or should I try adding lemon to the mixture maybe ? Im open to any suggestions and/or stories of experience

thanks fruities !

  • soaps and shampoos aren't natural or good for the body, even 'organic' cause they use sodium hodroxide. i just use sea salt or baking soda with water to wash and raw organiik vinegar etc

  • Hi! A while ago this post was made, hahah, but I can tell you my experience! =) I have long hair, down to my ribs. In the beginning of 2010, I shaved all of my hair of, and it has grown sence. I have not used any shampoo or balsam or anything, just water, and my hair feels alot more healthy than it did in times past when I used products!
Before I shaved it of, I had long hair also. And I tried to stop using shampoo and balsam, becouse I felt that they where slowly killing my hair, and the first maybe three weeks, my hair was really greasy, but after that, the grease disappeard and my hair became stronger! =D

  • Good luck. I was no poo for 6 months and never reached the "transition" stage. Now my scalp has a bunch of scabs all over, and its pussing, and its just really gross, I eventually had to go back to shampoo. But hopefully you have more luck with this! =)

    • All those chemicals in the shampoo are probably cleansing out when you stopped using it, don't poison yourself!

  • Corn starch really helps to absorb excess oil, it kind of works like a dry shampoo. Just make sure to brush through really good after so there's no corn starch that you can see! :) I went no poo for about 3 months before and now im doing it again. One thing I noticed was that my hair was a lot smoother, shinier, healthier but it was pretty waxy feeling even right up until the end but that's when I wasn't hcrv, I think its a lot easier when you're not consuming a lot of fat, your hair doesn't get as oily!

  • This discussion has definitely inspired me to go all the way! I too have been using baking soda about once or twice a week, and I will do an apple cider vinegar rinse on occasion. I have also halted the use of chemical styling products in all forms! I'm definitely going to continue to cut back the amount I use baking soda even more until I'm 100% no 'poo!

I do have a question though: I have very dehydrated hair due to highlights and using heat products to style for years. I admit I fell into that ridiculous habit so many women do by refusing to work with their natural texture and routinely damaging their hair and slathering harmful chemicals on it day in and day out. Has anyone tried organic 100% pure argan oil as a deep conditioning treatment every so often (maybe once a month) to assist with breakage and dryness cause by continued heat and chemical use? Also, is there any issue with doing this? I'm tempted to try it as my hair is so difficult to work with in it's current state from damage, especially with my hairstyle. I do not wish to use any products other than those found in nature, without any form of chemical additives, and I'm wondering if 100% pure argan oil would be a safe bet and if anyone has any experience with it.

  • I stopped using shampoo about 4 years ago. I use 1 cup Apple Cider vinegar in 2 cups of water. I wash my hair every couple of weeks.

  • I found that it depends on what you eat.  Last summer I was almost all raw and my hair was wonderful no poo!  When I started eating cooked (for winter) it got all gunky and blughhh.  As we eat more raw and aim for 100% then I will weaning to go no poo again.

  • Try to use nothing, only warm water and rubb your skin under your hair good with an towel.

  • Huh, beer sounds intriguing. I had never heard of it before, I'll definitely have to try it. I've never washed my hair regularly, but now whenever I do I haven't really been able to give up shampoo. I switched over to a more "natural" type called Dermaorganics. Same thing with my make-up, I switched to Juice Beauty. I think at this point deep down it's more of a refusal to let go? Especially considering I'm a make-up artist. It's a total bummer. Granted, it's only been a few months. I'm sure my body will start rejecting everything like it has with prior product usage.
