Inconsistency With This Lifestyle

Hello,

I've been on and off again with this the 811 lifestyle. I find that I get "bored" with it, you may ask why but I am not sure. Also, I am in college so I really only have $50 to spend on groceries each month which is not a lot of money for this lifestyle. If I eat bananas all day I'm sure I could live off of that $50 but I like variety. It's just so frustrating because I want to do this, I want to gain all the benefits, I want to stop following this SAD, but sometimes I feel like a lost puppy when I attempt to get back on this lifestyle. I feel like I need a food plan to follow or something. Any tips or help?

  • Are you open to the RT4 alternative?  Cooked foods like rice & potatoes can be a lot more cost-effective if you're on a tight budget.  $50 a week isn't enough for this diet in most living locations.  It's upwards of $30 a day where I live, and if I want the more...interesting fruit, it's even more.  Persimmons are $1.99 EACH and an individual dragonfruit is a whopping $10 per fruit at my local health food store.  You will definitely get sick of eating the same thing day in & day out over time...you can only do banana island for so long before you need to incorporate some variety for your body (and brain).

And even bananas...I mean, my local bulk store sells a box of 13 bunches of bananas for something like $26 if I remember right, and I can burn through that in 4 days if I'm really going to town on them, so $50 is definitely not enough for an HCRV diet where I live for the month, let alone for the week.  However, you can do things like buy bulk rice, bags of potatoes, fruits & veggies from the "day old" bin, etc.  If your college has a campus cafeteria, ask the manager if they would be willing to donate the "old" fruit to you instead of throwing it away (a lot of places chuck stuff like spotted bananas thinking they are bad, which we know is when they are perfectly ripe!).

Do you get campus meals or meals at home (assuming you live at/in close proximity to home) or anything like that?  $50 a month is is less than $2 a day...even on the SAD diet, that's only enough money to buy one item off the Dollar menu with tax, which if I remember right is under 300 calories for a dollar McCheeseburger.  Even anorexics eat more calories than that, so hopefully you have some additional food resources!!  Anyway, we have lots of recipes & resources to share, but we need to know a little more about your situation...do you have access to other food sources?  Any access to any sort of kitchen for prepping? (even simple things like steaming rice)

  • I would go to one of the wholesale produce places and explain your situation and tell them you want to buy their over ripe produce from them for $10 every week.

    • but would this mean that I can only live off of bananas

      • no, whatever over ripe fruit they are going to throw out anyway is what you'd have.
