LOVING my new stand/sit workstation!!

Anyone who has a desk job, I HIGHLY recommend asking management to get you a stand/sit workstation. Sitting for long periods can be disastrous to your health, even if you are an athlete outside of work.

Fortunately, my desk at work could easily be raised and the safety control guy has ordered me a drafting chair so that I can sit if I want; but I really don't feel the need. I've been standing all day long for the last 3 weeks, no discomfort at all :)

here's some info on the subject...

peace, love you guys

  • I totally agree with the standing desk philosophy. I'm a computer science major and I worked an internship this summer where I was sitting at a computer for 8 hours a day.. by the end of it I hated sitting. I would always want to get up and walk around.

I feel that I'm able to think much more clearly when I can stand up and shuffle/walk around vs being constrained to a chair. After all, when I'm in a rut on a problem what I do is get up and walk around, and the answer will come to me. Or, it comes to me when I'm laying in bed. So back at school, I set up a standing/reclining desk in my apartment using some monitor arms.

    recline mode:

kind of hacked together but it gets the job done for now.. till I can get a longer monitor arm pole so I can bring the monitors up to eye level when i'm standing. One of those pneumatic adjustable desks would be alot nicer.. I don't have the money atm though :(

Also, I feel like I have so much more energy when I'm standing and can work a lot faster. Sitting is sort of a drain.

    • How much did it cost for each material in the pictures?

  • Reminds me... I'm selling mine, if anyone in the UK is interested. As new.
    • Why are you selling yours Jack? Do you not like it or...?

I'd be interested if I lived in the UK.

Right now I've got a sort of homemade standing desk, which basically means I put my computer on top of a box on top of my desk!

      • I like it. It's superb; perfect size, works very well. Excellent height adjustment for my height (I'm 6'/180 cm tall).

I'm downsizing, getting rid of my office, so there's all sorts of office equipment I'm getting rid of. I'll be on the move and will only keep my laptop and a few other items.

  • I really want one but everything in our workplace is standard issue.... I'm trying to problem solve around it, but other than shifting my position constantly and trying to take frequent (usually bathroom) breaks, I'm not having much success.....
  • True.

My work is going to hook me up a really nice mat. The same kind they have in the manufacturing department.

Some of my co-workers have definitely expressed interest :) Hopefully I've started a trend!

  • Great article!  Did you try it out before you decided to have your desk changed?
    • Actually no... it just seemed like such a great idea that I just went for it!

  • I work in a lab, so we have the taller work benches with higher style chairs. I like it. Usually I'm so busy that I'm standing anyway, but being able to lean against the chair, or prop my feet up on the little stool is nice. It's a good combination.
