Low B12 and ferritin levels

I have recently tested my B12 levels. It has been a blood test - the only available where I live.

The result is: 105,9 pg/ml. The range: 197 - 866.

Before I will visit my doctor I would like to know your opinion what supplementation is best? I am afraid she will tell me to eat meat or take pills.

As far as I understand:

The sublinguals and injections are both ok (which is better?) but I should avoid cyanocobalamin?

Also my ferritin levels are low: 12,3 ng/ml (range: 13 - 150). Does it mean that I should take some supplements or try to eat more things that have iron and check my levels again after couple of months?

I know that the doctor will say: eat meat. So I prefer to ask you and then talk to her about other solutions. I want to be healthy but I would prefer to avoid taking unnecessary drugs.

You should´nt take Iron supplements, it can be dangerous, its not that harmless than often said. If you wnt than only plant based supplements, no chemical iron

  • went to dr. yesterday for review of blood work requested... seriously deficient in vitamin D and B12.  She recommended 5000 D3 per day (am using liquid D3 each drop is 1000 IU D3)  and 1000 mcg of b12 per day for a month and then two days a week after that.  Supplementation she recommended on top of those deficiencies was for Zinc.

She wouldn't even discuss my  Cholesterol-- she said it was too wacky, all over the place and said it was related to the deficiencies -- that I should feel much better as a result of attending to this.

Mentioned that I had taken my blood pressure before I came in and I was shocked..normally being a blood donor often had my blood pressure taken and is typically was around 110/70 and yesterday it was 140/89.  Asked if the change fit in the context of the deficiencies and she said yes.

Politically, doctors are not allowed to request blood work/lab stuff done of vitamin D whenever they wish (sick society is what the government condones) so unless I do request the work my self (not subsidized by Gov't) won't have another lab work done until October, 2013.

    Hope this helps.

  • The low ferritin just means you need to add more iron-rich foods. If that's a problem you can take iron pills. I personally am unable to take iron pills as they always make me horribly sick to my stomach. Strawberries, watermelon, and dates are all good sources of iron.

    • Great I love watermelond and soon there is season for strawberries here :)

  • this link says that dandelion flowers contain B12. Might be a much saner source of b12... I love the flowers and the leaves by the way. http://realfoodforlife.com/dandelion-flower-health-benefits/

Also years ago I was anemic but got it handled with loads of fresh parsley in my smoothies, like half a pound a day and that would handle my iron, ferritin, and the rest of it in 1-3 days.

I would avoid doctors with that kind of attitude, some of them can be so stuck in false data or pharma money stuck as well that they may think they have the right to take your body to the psych wards with the excuse that you would not know how to care for yourself and they know how to care for you. It happened quite a bit in Germany up to the last weeks and for millions of common people. I know it has happened in the US and is not rare in there either. So doing tests is good enough, then you could look for a doctor who is opened to new ideas or even vegan doctors. They are many on the net.

    • Thank you for advice :)

  • sort it out with injections, it is the fastest way..

  • I would like to point out that I am vegan for ethical reasons. It is very difficult for me to talk to my doctor because where I live it is not popular and people/doctors think that I is very strange, I am abusing my body etc...
