Ulcerative Colitis and High Carb Vegan Diet

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this community, glad to be here!  I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitits (proctitis) about a year ago.  Bleeding with diarrhea.  I managed to get the diarrhea and bleeding under control through drinking keffir and staying away from grains and legumes.  It was the only thing that helped me.  Since then my stools are solid however constipation can be a problem every now and then.  Bleeding is also a lot less with periods of no bleeding.

I've been vegetarian for almost 10 years now.  I tried the high carb raw vegan diet for about two weeks, consisting of mostly bananas, however I did not see much change in my symptoms.  I've also tried a juicing only diet.  Did not do anything to the bleeding (except when I juice cabbage).   I read Dr. David Klein's book, and am eating mostly potatoes and easy to digest food after I stopped with the raw vegan diet.

Current symptoms are slight bleeding, constipation every now and then, burning feeling in my rectum, lots of burning gas depending on what I eat.  I feel very underweight at 55kg (121 pounds) and 173cm.  I'm even trying a high protein low residue diet consisting of banana shakes with vegan protein and olive/flax oil to see if I can gain some weight and give my bowels a rest (low fibre).  Supplements include l-glutamine and high quality vitamins.  Yes I know this is contrary to high carbon lifestyle but I'm really trying everything here.  I'm also on oregano oil, wormwood and black walnut to make sure that I don't have an overgrowth of some parasite or something.

As you can see, I'm currently trying some things and have been through a lot.  I need do adopt a lifestyle that will ultimately cure my disease.  For that I need support and advice from people who have potentially been through the same that I have.  From my beliefs as a Christian and science I know the raw vegan diet is the best for me, however I have not seen the results as I hoped for.  Some people claim miracles after one week on bananas.  The only thing that made a real difference for me was keffir and staying away from grains and legumes, however it did not heal me, just took care of most of the symptoms.

Any advice will be appreciated!  I want to put this horrible disease behind me and live a normal life for a change.

  • I'm sorry you are going though this. My husband has ulcerative colitits and the following is a remedy that has worked very well for him. He used a product called RF Plus - it has worked wonders. He took two pills 3x's per day until no bleeding then started a maintenance dose of approx 2 pills per day but you may need a different dosage. He also used Natural vitamin E .1000iu  5-10 pills 3 times a day until bleeding subsides, then a maintenance dose of 3-5 per day . You may need to experiment and see what dose works best for you.

Here are the links to the products we have used:
    RF Plus:

    Natural Vitamin E:

UC can be very debilitating, and serious so please take care. If the bleeding does not stop please see a doctor as this can be very serious.
    Take care and God Bless.

    • Hi DMM,

Thanks for the info.  Why is your husband taking Vitamin E?  It is the first time that I heard of taking Vitamin E.  I have taken some of the supplements individually in RF Plus.  Unfortunately the product is not available locally in my country.  The cost of importing it is just ridiculous.  I'll see if I can find more of the ingredients and make my own mix.

My doctor gave me some enemas and sulfasalazine pills to control the symptoms.  I have not taken them yet - scared to go down that road!!  Fortunately my symptoms are mostly under control.  Looking to completely heal from this disease

      • Vitamin E is a potent anti inflammatory and antioxidant and in hi doses really helps ulcerative colitis. I have also read people doing enemas with 8000 iu of natural vitamin E with great success and relief but we have not had to do that taking high doses orally. Just make sure you if you choose to try it, that the vitamin E is mixed tocopherols AS D-ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA, DELTA. Most other vitamin E supplements in stores are synthetic vitamin e and will not be effective.

        Hope this helps!

  • So sorry you are going through this!  It sounds like you have made some very good progress and already know a lot after reading David's book.  How long have you been following his recommendations and how has it been since?  Several members here have followed his advice with success.

Water fasting may be another way to speed the healing process. Dr. Joel Fuhrman  has a website with a membership.  You can ask him questions at one level and at the basic level you can read all the questions others have asked and get a lot out of that. https://www.drfuhrman.com/membership  He has water fasted many clients and has a great book out about water fasting.  I have read many books on water fasting and found his member forum to be extremely helpful even after all my reading. Just one or two day fasts every couple of weeks can have tremendous healing benefits.

    • Hi ednshell,

Thanks for the advice.  Regarding Dr. David.  I'm not in particular a big fan of him, but he has some good advice in his book.  One of the main problems with UC is an unbalanced gut flora, and his book does not really cover remedies.   I've followed his diet strictly for two weeks, however it did not bring relief to my symptoms.  Resolving most of my flora issues made a bigger difference.  I am currently mostly raw however I am taking supplements and some cooked food every now and then when 'life' happens.

I have not considered fasting due to my weight, however I am doing juice fasts (fresh vegetable and fruit juice) which is much the same idea (I think).  I will investigate water fasts more.

I have joined the group.  Thanks for sharing it!
