  • I've been salt free for nearly a year with the only exceptions being: 9 months ago in some raw cabbage salad thing at a raw potluck. Even then I was off of salt due to it's ill effects on me. It messed me up. I slipped up and ate some dulse about 6 months ago and went for a run the next morning to quickly flush it out of my system. I felt dry yet bloated, and my mouth was dry and salty. The salt just poured out of my body on the run, and it was discomforting to feel that salty and dehydrated. All that from just a little piece of dulse.

With this being my only salt intake over the past year I still have salty sweat. Wouldn't we still have salty sweat (allbeit less salty then when salt is in the diet) eating 80-10-10 with just celery as the highest source of sodium? Sodium come out through sweat therefore if you have sodium in your diet wouldnt the sweat be at all salty? Ask DurianRider to lick his helmet strap and tell us his sweat isn't salty. I believe you guys tho when ya say his sweat isn't salty at all. I'm just amazed by it.
  • I have been raw since Sep 06 and was eating TONS of salt, since lots of people in the raw movement claim it's so wonderful for you. I knew it was a bad thing, since I would finish my salad and feel gross. I would retain water and my calf muscles would blow up to the point of feeling like they were about to explode! It felt like the complete opposite of health!

I started 811 in September 08 at which time I gave up salt, seaweeds, tamari, etc. For the first few months, every single night the glands in the back of my throat would secrete salt. It was literally like I had done a salt rinse or something. I figured it was a good sign though. This taste is now gone, so perhaps I have released my salt. But to be honest, I haven't sweat in awhile since it is just now getting warm.

I also noticed that at one point I was tasting something metallic in my mouth and when I put a metal spoon in my mouth, it actually created a charge that was painful!

      ohhh..did something else happen?

  • Do you think its natural to 'hold onto fluid' in the body Mark? I don't feel awful or anything because of it but I am very sensitive to what is going on in my body & it doesn't feel optimal.
I know for every gram of carbohydrates we store 3grams of water but this fluid retention is different & Im sure is related to excess salt in my bloodstream
  • It's been over two years with zero added salt for me. I don't have salt elimination, however. For the first couple months I had some, but then it was gone.

It's pretty crazy that your body could still be clearing out your excess.

However, even though I've never seen you in person, I have noticed that you are always looking better and better in your photos. I especially notice it in your face compared to some older shots. Hope you eventually get everything cleared out.
    • salt on my skin after working out intensely (usually more than an hour)

I was 811 with gourment raw potlucks in between for a year or so before that (also had 1month of cooked food), strict 811 since Dec 08.
      • Whoops thats strict 811 since DEC 07 not 08!
    • Hey Andrew, I think the rate at which one eliminates salt can depend on many factors, some which could be...
      -metabolism speed
-The efficiency of ones lymphatic system
      -Health of eliminatory organs
      -Past salt intake
-the amount of exercise one does, the intensity & duration
      -Past drug abuse
      -climate

I seem to hold fluid more than any raw person I know (which I guess is not many!) & it can sometimes make me look chubby, even though I feel my bodyfat % is reasonably low, even today I feel as though Im still holding a good couple of kgs directly related to the salt still circulating in my system & possibly in my tissues.

I used to take many recreational drugs, thyroid tablets & antibiotics which Im sure have compromised & damaged certain organs that are now (since being LFRV) have a chance to heal.

Yes I agree my face does show the most change, i know it will all come out because I see DRs results & realize I can achieve similar. I'm going to continue to up my exercise intensity so i can sweat it out!

Andrew have you been working out intensly for a long time?
      • Depends how long long is.

Around seven years ago I used to be overweight at 220 pounds and wasn't really doing anything then. That year I started doing Ninjitsu, a pretty strenuous martial art, while I improved my diet.. I went vegan 4 and a half years ago or so and started running too. First I ran just a few miles, then gradually more and more. I was also hiking and rock climbing and still doing Ninjitus.

Now I just do the running, I bike, and do yoga, but I messed up my foot last fall and am only not building back up my mileage. My first post-injury race is Saturday. A simple 5k to get me started. Last summer I was up to running 20-miles at a stretch, though.

        So hope that helps.

Can I ask how old you are? I'm 24 now and so had less time to trash my body before starting to get healthier. If you were at it for years I'm sure it would take longer.
        • thanks Andrew yes helps a lot!, Im 29 in Sept ( a little more thrashing time than you :-)
I can see that the suspended salt has most likely been eliminated through your intense workouts as DR does similar or even maybe more intense workouts.

i have been working out for many years but usually it would consist of strength work like weights, gymnastics & yoga, some kickboxing & 10km runs which yielded less sweat.

I have tasted salt in the past but Since doing intense workouts on my bike (3-5hrs) & running in the hills I have really been tasting the salt more than ever.
